Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Is this a suspicious situation

I have just been to view some cavalier king charles spaniel pups from someone who is selling them in the same town as me. The people met me at their front gates and brought out one of the pups who seemed way to tiny to leave her mum, they are not kc'd as the breeder said this will stop prospective buyers from showing their pup and breeding from them. I said I would go away and think this all through, they then said I could buy an older dog if I wanted. They also said they do not vaccinate their dogs as they do not go outside of the property. Does this seem a strange situation or am I being over cautious. If I do buy one of these dogs they said they will come to look inside my house, check my garden and will call as often as they see fit within the first 6 months to check the dog is ok.

I'd stay well clear....sounds very dodgy to me

Why would a breeder be against one of their puppies being shown if they are proud of what they have bred? To stop one of their puppies being bred from, they endorse the KC registration "progeny ineligible for registration" whis is a common practice. NEVER buy a puppy which you have not seen with its mother. I would run a mile from this breeder, and contact the breed club for names of reputable breeders.

run away.....please.  Just because the dogs don't leave property doesn't mean they don't bring stuff in on their shoes/clothes.  Any breeder would want one of their pups to go into show if it was good enough, if not show then for obedience, agility etc etc etc.

I personally wouldn't buy a pup from these people

And I take it you ddin't see rest of litter and mum?

RUN A MILE!

Did they let you inside their house? Did you see the mother or rest of the litter? How do you know that they don't just buy these puppies in from Ireland/Wales from a puppy farmer and flog them on? Believe me that happens.

With cavaliers it is ESSENTIAL that you see proof of both parents recent testing for MVD (heart), or you may end up with a dog that dies age 5 or 6...... There is also a big problem in the breed with Syringohydromyelia, eyes should be tested, patellas checked -basically sadly this breed is a time bomb for disasters unless the parents health status is known and *proven*,  AND the grandparents as well.  Don't do it, you will only have heartache.......

I agree with all of the other posters, it's very supcious, if i were you i'd dig a little deeper and find out some info about them and then report the little buggers. Goldmali is soooo right.

this sounds like a very strange set up for selling a litter you should be able to see the  other pups plus one or both parents.... strange.... its as if they didnt want you to see the condition the pups were living in...
I'd walk away ....find a reputable breeder with knowledge of thier breed even if it takes a good while its worth the time ....sadly this pup may only bring you heartache plus cost you a good deal of cash in vet bills.

I had an uncle who had a Heinz 57 variety, she was the size of a Cocker, feathery black and brown coat.  Lovely little thing got out when in season and then produced one pup that looked the image of a yellow labrador. Would have passed as an Andrex pup at that point.  I would never buy from someone that didn't let me see the mother and the conditions they are being bred in.  Sounds like a Del boy deal to me.

fillis is right, they could just as easily register the pups and endorse them if they didnt want people to breed. The only part that sounded ok was the fact that they seemed interested in checking up on your home if they sold you a dog, but the rest sounds very dodgy go with your gut instinct and walk away

sounds very odd....hope the parents are not stolen...always worries me. However even STRANGER is that they should care enough to want to do a home check!!!!! Does no one else find this odd??? The two differing attitudes just do not add up. It sounds to me as if they are the sort who really care for their pets, but think showing is one of those awful cruel things that some people do so they are protecting their puppies from such dreadful people. (yes there really are folk out there like that!) They also sound like they care enough to do a home check.  HOWEVER I WOULD STILL AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE as they clearly do not have a realistic grasp of health issues and correct socilaising procedures.

Sam - my suspicious mind says they want to come and homecheck to see if you have anything worth stealing. I know... me bad... *puts self in crate and locks door*
- By earl [gb] Date 21.09.05 11:16 UTC
You and me both Phoebe.  This was also my first thought.  Maybe they only have this one puppy who they use to get into unsuspecting people's homes to see what they have worth stealing.  I'd try the breed club and KC to find a trustworthy breeder.
- By ClaireyS Date 21.09.05 11:25 UTC
maybe they were just saying it about the homecheck so they look like careing breeders, and when it comes round to it they probably would say that they trust the person or come up with an excuse that they cant make it.
- By sandrah Date 21.09.05 11:38 UTC
The fact they brought the puppy out to you and didn't let you see the litter with the bitch would make me run a mile.
- By inca [gb] Date 21.09.05 11:53 UTC
run a mile as the others have said....this is terrible breeding practice

ROFLOL Nice one :-D :-D I think you will need to make room for a few more in that cage :-D ;-)

Did you see the mum? If not I would be suspicious that the pup could be stolen...its not uncommon

or bought in ..seems to be a lot of this going on at the moment
- By LucyD [gb] Date 21.09.05 21:15 UTC
That's exactly what I thought when I read that they wanted to come and poke around in the OP's house - they are casing the joint!! And never buy a puppy where the breeder doesn't let you in their house and just brings out a puppy to show you, and doesn't register supposedly pure bred puppies. Also agree with Goldmali - any Cav should have parents tested clear for hearts and eyes, and ideally SM though that's nearly impossible - the puppy itself should also be litter screened as clear for hearts and eyes. Stay well clear of them, there's something very fishy about it all!
