I am about to start showing a pedigree puppy and have a cross breed neuter bitch that I would like to take with me sometimes so that she is not left at home for long periods. I am unable to ascertain if 'not for competition' applies to non pedigree as well as registered dogs.
Can anyone shed any light on this? I am aware of the other options as regards what else to do with her when we go to shows, but I would like some advice on this particular question rather than other suggestions!
Not a hundred percent sure.
Best suggestion would be to ask the kennel club.
I guess you could possibly get your cross breed registered on the working register at the KC
and then they may allow NFC entries at some shows..
But the KC is the best place to start asking questions...
Good Luck
:)

For championship shows I belive you need to have her at least on the working register but I don't think so for open shows. I have seen many with just a pet name enterd! and cross breeds can be NFC :)

If you enter a dog at any KC show(except Companion shows of course) & want to take another then the other dog has to be entered so needs to be reg with the KC
If you just want to go to a show without entering a dog you will need to check with the show secretary that the new KC rule re spectator dogs has been allowed at their show
This applies for all shows, but some like obedience shows are a little more lax, crossbreeds etc are obviously involved in obedience so someone taking an extra dog isn't so obvious

get her reg on the working reg, dosent cost too much & you get to choose her posh name!!!
We are in the same position - we have a ped Boxer and a springer cross. I have paid the £12 to get my springer cross entered on the Activity Register (you can get the form directly on the KC site), he has a nice posh name now and can enter agility, working trails, obedience tests and flyball and, as I am lead to believe, can be placed on the 'not for competition' part of the form so he can come along to the shows with our Boxer.
Must add that he hasn't done much in the way of agility though as having the pup has meant that he just 'had' to have four, then three meals a day which has put on a few extra pounds around his waist that shouldn't be there, oh well, know how that feels ;)

Many thanks for the prompt advice. I actually had a call from a show sec. this morning on the subject and she said that registered companion dogs are not eligable but thanks for the working register idea, we do obedience with her, although not yet up to competition standard, but I would like to do something with her in that way anyway (being a Lurcher she is apt to go into her own little world now and then and turn a deaf'n, so quite how far we'll get will be interesting!).
LOL - I don't think it's just a lurcher that has these tendencies, just took out my springer cross who decided that today was the day for sniffing *each* blade of grass as he went passed  No matter how many times I said leave, heel, come close he simply looked at me and I could see him rolling his eyes back at me

Love him to pieces though :D
How about disappearing 'trap one' style?
Before I go rushing off spending my £12, does anyone else know if registering on the working register will be acceptable for not for competition? Moonmaiden?

I had to register one of my cockers on the working register in order to enter him NFC at the SKC. I would assume that if its acceptable for champ shows, it should be ok for open shows (but don't quote me on that ;-) )

How would they know any different?

Open shows I just take my non show boy, I rarely enter him NFC
Might be a bit obvious when it's a crossbreed! I have visions of exhibitors pointing and telling me to take my mut and leave town at gunpoint!!
Thanks for the advice, very grateful for all your contibutions.

very true, I didnt think of that :D
