I brought a new puppy, a King Charles Spaniel about 3 weeks ago today, I got him home onthe Friday and on Saturday he ended up with a strange cough, on the weekend of August Bank Holiday, we never thought anything of it and took him in to the Vets for his 1st of two Jabs after the Parvo jab, I mentioned to the vet about the coughing and it turned out he had Kennel Cough which we could not have his innoculation as they out him on antibitoics, he got worse by the Thursday so took him back, he got given additional pills of anti-inflammatries and anti-bacterial, he improved, but then my other dog, 1 1/2 year old Chihuahua got the cough and we ended taking him to the vet with the puppy, they ended up both on anti-biotics again, the night time is the worst, they're both really bad, and then Monday gone we took them in nd it seems the lungs are cleared, but the cough is simply to do with their sore throats so they have remained on the anti-inflammataries, we were also told we could use BENYLIN CHILDRENS to help them at night since this is when they're both worse, last night we gave them Benylin Childrens for chesty coughs (unsure whether chesty/tickly), it helped them last night, but my question is, how long can you keep them on Benylin for?, and can it be dangerous if continued for a long period of time? I am unsure and the vet never said how long you could do it for, the dosage was literally the tip of a teaspoon amount as recommended, and the only time they coughed was when going to bed and in the morning about 5.30ish. As before they suffered throughout the night, as you can gather they do sleep in my room so I can monitor them.
thanks!

Why not phone the vet and ask?
I've used Benelyn for kennel cough, very effectively, only for a couple of days use if I remember correctly. The pharmacist thought I was mad when I said I didn't know if it was tickly or chesty and then explained it was for the dog. She agreed it would be effective, so if you really don't want to ask the vet, ask the pharmacist!
Thanks for that! I should do that, im actually going to the vet tonight so will ask him then!
thanks for your advice.

I spoonful of honey is good to stop the coughing :)

My vet recommended Benylin when mine first had kennel cough. I have used it ever since. I think I keep it going for about a week.

the last time my dog was a bit snuffly I bought original (drowsy) benylin to ease her snuffles and knock her out. she had a major dose of the runs so in future I'll be sticking to non-drowsy - definitely a lesson learned for me. I was wandering the streets in my jammys with a long coat on picking up explosive dire-rear every 2 hours through the night.
Hi
My vet recommended Benylin Chesty cough for my large Dobe when he had kennel cough - worked a treat - I think he was on it for about a week - well we went through 2 smallish sized bottles. Only think was he would not take it straight had to be mixed in milk :-)
Thanks ever so much everybody for your advice on this! The benylin deffo worked on both Sam and Leo, Sam has actually just got over his Kennel Cough, the vet told us it was a bad case as his lasted 4 weeks, Leo would of had his 4 weeks this Thursday, so fingers crossed he will be ok, back to the vet on Saturday morning for a check up!
Now I know that it should be ok to use Benylin for about a week I will bare that in mind for future for their coughs if they should get another one, bless Leo, he is such a small Chihuahua he suffers so badly, and the new puppy Sam has taken his illness on and still remained happy go lucky! Gotta love him.
Thanks again everyone!
Helen
