How do I get my girl to stand properly without constantly baiting her, i free stand and as long there is food in my hand or her mouth she will stand 4 square, but her head is out of line because she is striving for food, i am trying to build up the time of stand and reward with treat but she just looks bored as in ok show be the food and i'll show!!  HELP ps she is a stubborn low attention span malamute

How old is she? Do you stand her across the front of you or facing towards you? How long are you expecting her to to it?

So many questions! Perhaps you could Register (it's free!) so the malamute specialists can help you.

You want to teach her to look at the bait and not chew on the bait.  Gradually starting with split seconds take the bait away from the nose and tell her to "leave" and then give it back.

Eventually you should be able to hold the bait for her to look at and reward when you want to reward.  you will be using commands stand and leave (maybe stay) all at once!!!! :)

If you want to take the bait away teach her to stand on command and with a hand signal.  Praise with food when she has got it right.

I have handled dogs in both ways.  one dog I couldn't use food with because he would jump.  With and command and a hand signal he stood perfectly.  Much to his normal handlers annoyance who he doesn't stand for.....!

Also what bait are you using?  Is it exciting bait like liver, sausage or cheese?  and smelling really tasty?  if so don't use it.  use something more bland like an ordary dog biscuit!  This way there will be no need to lunge! :)
