Topic Dog Boards / Health / Glaucoma Question
- By Phoebe [gb] Date 18.09.05 23:43 UTC
My little old shar-pei has glaucoma and it totally blind with it. Her left eye is very swollen and although it doesn't bother her in the least and she's amazingly lively for any dog who's almost 11, I'm scared it will rupture. Strangely enough the right eye has actually gone down to near normal all on it's own. The vet is loath to remover her eyes and will only do it as a last resort as her kidneys have started to show changes. Neither of us want to put her through a general anaesthetic.

Have any of you who have had dogs with glaucoma had the vet do the procedure where they inject gentamicin into the eye to bring the pressure down? I know this can be done under sedation and local anaesthetic, which I feel might be safer than a general. But before I discuss it with the vet, any personal advice/experience of the procedure would be gratefully received.
