any advice would be greatly appricated at this time.
i have a young dog who has had a terrible tummy, stool samples show campylobacter. the vet has given me erythromycin to treat him with. he is ok within himself. big trouble is i have a bitch who is 7 weeks in whelp, the vet has suggested treating her as well. i am taking 3 days of stool samples in on monday morning. i am obviously concered about giving her anything whilst she is whelp and wonder if anyone has given the anti b to a bitch in whelp before? i told the vet my concerns and he said there doesnt SEEM to be any contri indecators to the drug, but i am still very worried. i do realise that if she does have campylobacter she will pass it on the the newborns. i guess i will have to wait and see what her sample shows before giving it to her,she will be over 8 weeks when /if i have to give it to her. so i guess i am just hping that someone out there can tell me they have used it and is safe!

Hi im not a great fan of giving anything to in whelp bitches but i would asy in this case the benfits would outway this.
campybactor can be serious in newborns and not worth the risk. I had a in whelp bitch contract this at five weeks pregnant within 48 hours she looked like a skeleton she was treatd with erythemicin (spelling) and she recovered quickly and there were no effects to the puppies we had to treat all the dog plus a rigid disinfection program within the kennels and house.

Be very careful, as I contracted camplybactor from an unknown source, but having 3 dogs, one only 9 months at the time, I was unsure if I'd  caught it from the puppy or contaminated food.  Me and my family eat a lot of chicken and I had taken some back to the supermarket that was off so it could have been that, no sure.  It is very unpleasant and left me ill for weeks and weeks and in very bad pain.  I was given the same antibiotic, it did work but was left with symptoms for a number of weeks.  So be very careful how you  handle their stools.  Also the stigma is not very nice as I was contacted by my local council offices as it had to be reported to the environmental health.

Excuse my ignorance but what it campylobacter/erythromycin?  And what are the symptons?

Campylobacter is a bacterium and erythromycin is an antibiotic.
