CAN ANYBODY ADVISE ON PROS AND CONS OF HAVING A ROTTIE CASTRATED.  HE GETS TOTALLY OVER EXCITED WHEN HE MEETS PEOPLE, HE ALWAYS HAS HE JUST LOVES FUSS.  OBVIOUSLY HE IS VERY LARGE AND HE HAS TO BE SHUT AWAY WHEN PEOPLE VISIT AND A NIGHTMERE AT THE VETS AS HE WANTS TO WASH THEM!!!  HE JUST LOVES PEOPLE BUT HES TOO BIG FOR THAT!  WE'VE DONE ALL THE IRGORE THE DOG ECT AND HAD ADVISE FROM VETS AND FOLLOWED ADVISE TO THE TEE, BUT HE JUST IS NUTS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!!!  HE IS WELL BEHAVED APART FROM THE OVER EXCITMENT, HE HAS BEEN TO TRAINING CLASSES AND THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENS HE JUST WANTS FUSS.  WOULD IT HELP IF HE WAS CASTRATED AS WE NEVER INTEND TO BREED FROM HIM.  ARE THEIR ANY NASTY SIDE EFFECTS ON THEM?  COAT, WEIGHT, BEHAVIOUR ECT?

Personally I'd wait till he's grown up, and see what he's like when his hormones have naturally reduced to their adult level. (Think of the difference between teenage boys and mature men!)

Ditto the others, he isnt mature yet so no, just keep on wtih the training.

Instead of bunging him in another room, could you work on training him to do something else, other than 'wash peoples faces and bounce like a loon'.... usually, telling a dog 'stoppit' isnt very productive, because he 'needs' to be doing something, if you give him a new something to do, that can often work.

There can be nasty side effects from neutering, it can slow the metabolism, thus makes the dog gain weight easier (easily solved with less food and more exercise). It can cause a massive drop in confidence which can result in fear aggression. It can cause male dogs to smell female which may invite unwanted attention from other male dogs.

Personally I would have him done when he is around 12 months old, unlsee you are wanting to breed from him. Such a big dog will be difficult to control if he catched a wiff of a bitch in season. There are no real health implications in teh operation, although it makes it impossible for him to get cancer 'down there' and he is much less likley to meet with an accident trying to get to a bitch :) I believe that the op only takes around 20 mins and my Lab didnt read the bit about being calm and quite for 2 weeks after :rolleyse: If you are careful about feeding he is no more likley to put on weight. Oh and you dont get anything like so much 'willy gunge' after the op and your friends dont get to see what a big boy he is every time he sits down and thinks of sex :D

i have rottweilers and they can get rather excitable so i put them in another room when people come in, behind a baby gate so they have full view of whats going on then i let them in after a few mins if they are still being silly i put them back in the other room for a bit longer, this seems to have worked with all our dogs
good luck
