My friend has a 3 year old Basset and is finding that his collar is rubbing against the rolls under his neck.Does anyone know if this is a common problem with Bassets and what kind of collars do you use to prevent this? She was thinking a rolled leather one would help as he can't wear nylon or cotton.Anyone with Basset experience able to advise? :)

I have done a search and see that yes it is a common problem but what do you use instead? :)

if he was my dog i wouldnt put a collar on him,ide use a harness wen hes goes out for walks .just an idea :)

She does use a harness for walking him but the problem is  more for identification.She lives in the States and they have to by law have rabies tags etc so she's trying to find something that won't rub his chin.She did think about making some kind of modified bandana or perhaps rolled leather would help? I said i'd ask on here as i think there are one or two Basset people?

couldnt she atatch some id to his harness? you can get some rearly loverly comfy ones abit like a vest for him with a loop at the top to attach his lead.
he could wear that pretty much all the time
just an idea.
other than that i dont have anything else to sujest! :)

Yes, this is a problem with Bassets who tend to carry spare rolls of flesh especially round the neck.
What I have done is to use a harness when out walking, and I have a really thick and wide leather collar that she wears indoors and of course, out walking with her ID on.
I keep the collar loose on her neck so you can get at least most of your fingers under it, that way it does not chafe her neck.
As this is used solely for her ID and is too loose to use for attaching her lead, I attach her lead to her harness only.
This works for me and my Basset has always been used to this.
