Hi everyone,
I've just found out a friends 10 month old dog has parvo, he's had all his injections when he was a puppy so I cant understand how this has happened.
He' in the vets as we speak, it is touch and go. Is this possible with vaccinated dogs? Apparently, theirs been 9 cases in this area.  I'm too scared to take my dogs out, do u think they would be at risk? Dont know what to do.

No vaccination is 100% guaranteed - what it does do is minimise the chances of a) contracting the illness in the first place, and b) lessen the seriousness of the attack. Also viruses mutate, so the vaccination may not be effective against all variants (as with human flu jabs).

Here are some Parvo Facts. Dogs and puppies can contract parvo even if they never leave their gardens, so you should still continue to take them out for exercise.

Our Lab puppy got very, very, very sick at 6 months, fully vaccinated.  Parvo was suspected but not tested for as the test is quite expensive and VEt said treatment was the same as for any other severe gastro. ailment.  Vet said the fact that she was vaccinated and not a really young puppy were factors in her favour.   Vet said a dog's white blood cell count is normally 16 (this is some kind of abbreviation, I'm not really up on how the numbers are presented).  A count of 8 is a sick dog.  A count of 2 is a dead dog.  Jet was 4.  She was on IV for three days but fully recovered.  We were told she might be susceptible to gastro ailments so should only board at certain kennels which could disinfect between dogs, other than that, no caveats.  Your friend's dog is even older so hoping for a good outcome.

If I have the blood stuff wrong corrections would be appreciated, it was 12 years ago.

I really do wish vets would test in cases of suspected Parvo.  How are we ever going to get clear picture as to what is going on within the dog community ref parvo if vets won't conduct testing?
