Hi I have posted before about complete dry v wet food.I changed my 18 week old westie over from Ped complete and pouch mix to JWB (gradually) however he doesnt seem to like the JWB, I think. I am giving him half the recommended amount because he was leaving loads and now he still leaves about a 1/4 of it. He manages to eat most of it if I mix it with some ped pouch I have left over. I have tried the lamb and turkey JWB. I think he is still hungry as he snatches the treats from my hand during training exercises and I am catching him eating worms and slugs in the garden. (yuck). I am tempted to just go back to the ped complete although you all say it is not nutritious enough.I dont want to keep trying different foods in case this makes things worse. What would you suggest? Is JWB generally popular with dogs?
Is it partcularly a dry food you would like your dog to be on? If so, you could try Arden Grange which smells great and my dogs love or you could try Naturdiet which is a wet food with loads of different flavours and most dogs love.

Have just changed my Cavalier onto it following the runny poo thread from last month. He ate it for a few days, then was a bit reluctant. I am gradually changing the other two onto it too, and for the last 2 days have found that if I pour his JWB into the mixing bowl that has traces of pouch in it, he is much happier. If you want to feed dry, try mixing it with just a teaspoon or even less of the Pedigree to give it some taste.
I panicked a few days ago when the poos went a little sticky again, but after weighing him and finding he's gained weight, have reduced his daily intake and the poos are improving again - phew, just a case of slight over feeding! He also seems to be pooing less, which I shall look forward to when my Yankee is completely changed over - Mr 'I can poo 5 times in a 20 minute walk'!
ps I am giving him between 1/2 and 2/3 the recommended amount, so don't worry if your dog is eating less than they say to give!
Hi JuneH, I'd try and stick with the JWB and stay off the pedigree chum. You could try dampening the food with some warm water if he prefers wet food or try adding some gravy. As for not eating much food, If any of my dogs don't finish their food after ten minutes I pick it up and offer them less the next time they are fed. Clare

How much are you feeding him? Are you following the amounts on the side of the puppy kibble pack?
At 18 weeks he should still be having three meals, is he leaving a 1/4 of each meal? if so then perhaps he just needs the meals divided into four meals ;) Unless it says otherwise, the amount given on the side of the packet is usually for the whole day, and needs to be divided amongst the different meals ;) There are two flavours of puppy food from JWB, perhaps he'd like a different flavour? or maybe mix them occasionally? Some dogs just don't need as much food as others, as long as he's growing, has plenty of energy and feels right (feel his ribs) then he'll be getting enough ;)
My Cavalier is on JWB with one tablespoon of Pedigree tinned mixed in. I did find that for a while she would only eat JWB on it's own for breakfast, and JWB mixed with Pedigree for dinner. Poppy likes the turkey and rice; duck and rice; and the lamb and rice. Haven't tried the fish and rice yet.
I have to admit we didn't weigh out the JWB, just judged it by how much she ate during previous meals and the fact that she was gaining weight but we could still feel her ribs and see she had a waist. A couple of weeks ago I did weigh out how much she was supposed to have and was shocked by just how much there was. I kept it in a separate container and gave her her normal amouts each day - it lasted 5 meals! If she ate the amount it says on the bag, she'd be the size of a house by now!! I did try one day giving her as much as it said, and she left more than she ate, even with some chopped up ham in it, she stopped eating when she'd had enough.
I have tried Poppy on Nature Diet several times, she jus sniffs it and walks away even if I only put a teaspoon's worth in with her dinner - she knows there's something else in there and doesn't like the smell of it!! She's eaten Nature's Menu a few times.
Although I wanted to get her off the Pedigree, I don't think one tablespoon a day is going to do her any harm, so I'll just carry on mixing that in with the JWB.
She's always eating things from the garden - I try to get the slugs off her, and as for the snails, she crunches the shell and leaves the body!
JWB once suggested to me that I put a splash, of very hot (not boiling) water on the food and let it stand for about a few mins so it's cool enough to feed. Just enough to half cover the pieces at the bottom. Then stir it round to mix in the wet bits and feed.
The hot water brings out a lovely smell and my lot go mad for it. I've done it with Turkey and the Fish and the dogs love it! :)

Thanks for the advice. I was going to put him on naturediet but the price put me off - that is if he eats what the recommended amounts say it would cost me 50 quid a month which I cannot afford. I am feeding him 3 times a day, as an experiment I gave him pedigree dry for breakfast and he would not eat it at all, I then mixed it with the wet pedigree and he eat most of it, leaving some of the biscuit. I gave him JWB ( I have bought the turkey and rice and the lamb and rice) for lunch and he would not eat any of it so I threw it away and he had nothing. This evening I mixed the ped dry and JWB dry with some water to soften it and he eat the lot although I only gave him a small amount. I will try mixing the JWB with some gravey or a bit of pedigree - that sounds a good idea.
One other thing I thought of is that I give him a stuffed Kong in the morning as he goes in his crate for 2 hours while I go to work, and that settles him so he doesnt pine. Perhaps he is getting stuffed out on that. Are there any foods which would not bulk him out which would go in a kong?
I put Nature diet in my dogs kongs and they suck them for hours! I know it is expensive but a couple of packets won't set you back to much. I have an EBT and a boxer and I divide up 2 pkts a week for them. Soft cheese is another good filler!
