My old dog of eleven is making noises like he is choking whilst eating and he stands like he is about to be sick.....the only way I can describe it is like he gets bits stuck.  has Anybody come across this before?

No, but it could be bloat, which needs vet attention urgently....

All of mine have done this occasionally, standing hunched and sucking the tummy right in - it's when they start a 'reverse sneeze' while eating.
