Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Chihuahua Breeding

I have a two year old Chihuahua. I am interested in breeding her as she is a fantastic breed and i would like to carry this on. I have been to the vets who advised me she was a good size for breeding as sometimes the Chihuahua can be too small and this causes difficulties. I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any good books which i can research breeding? Its my first time and i want to make sure that me and my dog are 100% ready for it and prepared. Also advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks

I dont know of any books perhaps someone else can help there, but i do know that your bitch must have all the relevant health tests done first. :-)

The Book of the Bitch by Evans & White is essential reading for anyone considering breeding.

Hi Guest,

The best thing you can do is firstly get in touch with the breeder of your bitch :)  He/she should be willing to mentor you with all aspects of breeding if your bitch is of suitable quality and passes the required health tests for your breed (specialist tests, not merely a GP vet check-over).

If you use Google, you should also be able to find contact details for your Breed Club(s) which will be able to advise further still and will almost certainly be best able to provide you with a list of breed specific books covering any complications arising in breeding and whelping toy breeds.

Regardless of whether you intend to breed or not, keeping an entire bitch is a huge commitment and it is worthwhile investing in "The Book of the Bitch" which is readily available on-line and I think also now sold in Pets-at-home :)

Breeding is not something which you should go into lightly.  If you read various thread on the breeding board of the forum you will see that often things can go very wrong - even for the most experienced owners :(  possibly even resulting in the loss of your bitch.

Regards, Teri

"Dogs and How To Breed Them" by Hilary Harmer features chihuahuas a lot (the author bred them).
