After having your bitch spayed, as anyone later noticed any adverse affects because of spaying. Or are you all satisfied with the procedure?
Thanks, Gill.

we have always had our bitches spayed if we are no longer going to show or breed from them,we recently had our 7yrs Labrador spayed after putting it off she is fine even though the vet said she had the beginnings of pymetra (hope thats spelt right) the day after spaying she was fit and well and you wouldnt know she had a operation, she is quite a heavy Labrador and I worried about her as I say she is absoloutly fine and we have never ever had trouble I suppose its like people some fare well and some dont

I have had two of my bitches spayed, 1 because I felt she was too small to breed from and the other because she has had a litter of pups but it took an awful lot out of her.
Both of them recovered fully by the following day and had no side effects at all, the first one had the op a year ago and she is looking beautiful and is very healthy.
The other had it done a month ago (3 months after having her litter) and is really starting to look well now, her coat is growing well and she is picking up her lost weight.

I got a bitch spayed last year and am not really happy with the results, her lovely harsh coat has gone and in its place is this horrible soft coat so if I still wanted to show her I could not, also she has put on so much weight, I told my son he would need to put her on a diet as she is so heavy which cannot be good for her. The operation itself has gone well and apart from these problems she is fine. She is nearly 5 now.

Some people say they are more likely to become incontinent
don't know how true that is
& also the one speyed bitch I have, aged 11 1/2 seems to have
a 'desirable' odour as the male dogs in my neighbourhood 'fancy'
her. Hormone mix-up?
Fortunately her coat hasn't gone soft and she still has a sleek
hound figure.

I have worked with dogs for years and have always speyed the bitches we rehome. In the years I have been doing welfare all the bitches I have looked after have been speyed (and the dogs neutered) .. and never have I witnessed any adverse effects. None of the bitches have become incontinent although I have heard this can happen.
My own bitches were speyed and were well within a day. None of them has put on weight as I have controlled their diet and ensured a lot of exercise for them. Also I only ever feed them dog food ... no chocolate or human food.
If you are considering speying or not ... well I would say go for it .. if you have no intention of breeding (and to be honest .. sorry to say it breeders!! there are more than enough dogs in this world) then you can only benefit by the op. Your bitch will be free of the risk of pyemetra which can be fatal, and there will be not temptations for neighbouring dogs. Oh and none of my speyed bitches has ever attracted more doggy attention than any other.
Good luck whatever you decide.

I agree 99% with what Caitlin has said, infact I could have written everything that she said.. lol :-)
The 1% that I don't agree with is that my own spayed GSD bitches definitely turned Tarty ever six months !! They all lived to good ages and never suffered from any incontinence etc.

NB:All bitches, whether Rescue or my own, were never speyed before two years of age.

As Pam says, one of mine seemed to attract males after she was spayed. Must say, she was always a flirt before and was always happy with the effect she had on the males!

I really don't like the idea of spaying at too young an age, ie before the bitch is mature, but have absolutely no problem with bitches spayed once fully mature. I've not had a problem with them putting on weight, incontinence or anything else.
I have seen the odd bitch who has continued to have 'seasons' and become more attractive to males and had mood changes around the time that their season would have been due, although in the main this appears to be bitches who have been spayed as an emergency (ie when having a pyo) rather than ones spayed at the optimum time, half way between seasons.
