One of my pups from a litter came out without sac,and his fur is green ! He was the smallest but he has caught up. He is only 3 days old. He is much more vocal and active than the rest.Has any one had any experience with this ? Could he have  fluid in his ears?  thanks di.

I can't give you a technical reply, but one of my puppies had greenish stained fur too...he is now 8 weeks old and settling in to his new home, he was the pick of the litter - very active and vocal too - coincendence I'm sure. Also he was the last pup born, born 2 hours after the rest.

I think my green puppy stopped the production line.Six hours after "greenie " she gave birth to another pup on the sofa while we were trying to install the pig rails ! She wanted no part of the pig rails so we gave in and one hour after that she gave birth to another in the whelping box. Its good to hear that your green  pup turned out fine .I am a bit concerned. Was his fur still green at 8 weeks ?

Mum washed him and when she went out I cleaned him with pampers wipes, even so it still took about a week to get rid of the greenish tinge, thanks for the other posters letting us know what it was :)

Why do you ask is he could have fluid in his ears? Is he having trouble with his ears?

I can tell you 100% how it happens but someone else might but my understanding is sometimes when the get distressed coming down the do the toliet in the sack which is why they get a bit green.  Once he is old enough for a good clean it should all come off.

I think I have had 2 greenies. I could pick that one out for weeks till I could give it a better wash. :-)

Ain't puppies born with their ears closed ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.09.05 09:30 UTC
Yep! The ear canals don't open for about 10 days.

JG was just thinking of you. There is a Dalmation question just above this post for you :-)

Hi moonmaiden,

My reply should have said that also :-)

I was concerned as to why the poster asked and forgot tp say that :-D ..IE is there some visible problem with the ear area etc  or are they just asking because it was born out the sack and they thought fluid could get in.

There are no visible or obvious signs that anything is wrong with the ears. Since the ears are sealed as the eyes are there is no way that could be a problem.I was anxious and worried at the time of the post, and  I can't type ! At times he seems in distress and I am just a worried dog mom! Thank you all for your prompt and courteous responses. He has been incredibly quiet since my initial post.

Never had a green puppy but had a beardie bitch that was a noisy little g*t & if I hadn't had puppies before I would have thought she was in distress, she wasn't she was just a very vocal little bitch(in every sense of the word ;) ) She wasn't small & went on to be a very forward bitch all through her life

Thanks for the confirmation re the ears I thought they were closed like the eyes

Could be the puppy was just hungry & vocal about it to make sure mum doesn't over look him ?

Any worries & check with the vet

The stuff that is making him green is called meconium and as Blue said said it's the first faeces produced because the pup was distressed during delivery. If the pup isn't doing well I'd get the vet to see him as he may have aspirated meconium and it can block the airway or irritate the lungs.

Hi not sure how experienced you are but please he has settled down.

Sometimes they cry and it is a bit hard to tell.

I always go through the check list.

ARe the warm or cold.  If they are huddled together sometimes this can suggest they are cold if they are in opposite corners this sometimes suggests they are warm.

I put that puppy on the mother on it's own incase it is the one getting less because of getting pushed out but the others.

and on it goes.

The first few week are the worrying time without a doubt and when you are tired and late at night you mind thinks everything.

Fingers crossed he is settling down now. :-)
