Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / AKITA puppy wanted

We are family of 2 adults, an eleven year old girl, a hamster and monster goldfish: we would very much like to add an AKITA to our family. We have done a lot of reading about the breed and have spoken to a couple of breeders, and we are still very interested. Ideally we are looking for a pet rather than a show dog, although I would like to attempt some agility classes, more for the bonding and socialising rather than being good at it, although you never know!

We do work shifts so the dog would be alone for about 4 hours a day, but would have access to a fully fenced garden as well as the house. Ideally we were looking for a puppy with fawn colouring (my daughter loves this colouring) but as long as the puppy was healthy and suited to a pampered family life we are not fussed re colour or sex.

If you think you may have a puppy that would suit us or are expecting a litter soon, we would love to hear from you. We are in the Essex area but are willing to travel.

Hoping someone can help us.

Karen, Steve and Alex.

Contact the Sec. of the breed club - details at the bottom of the page here. Make sure any pup you buy comes from stock which has been hip and eye tested parents who have exemplary temperaments.

If you have read up on the breed you would already know that the Akita generally is a dog which cannot be let off the lead, therefore it would not be a good breed for agility. I know there are the few exceptions but I know a lot of akita people and they never let their dogs off the lead. If you have said this toe breeders I am surprised they have not told you this.
If youre looking for a dog which you can let off and have walks through the countryside, then an akita is not right for you. I am in no way dishing the breed. After BCs they are my favourite breed and my best friends who I show with have five of them who I adore. But they are a breed which you have to respect and think about.
