You're not likely to find a pedigree dog as a PUPPY in rescue, most are handed over to rescue when they are young adults or older. If you want a rescue puppy your best bet is to go to your local RSPCA or Dogs Trust and pick a crossbreed as there you  can sometimes find puppies, often from mothers that have been brought in whilst pregnant.

Have a look here www.dogpages.org.uk, they have a forum you can join with lots of dogs in rescue.

Hi Whispersmum.  You just gave me a little pang of nostalgia here.  Our rescued English Springer Spaniel (private rescue) was named Whisper.  She was four when we got her, purebred, registered, highly trained for obedience and hunting, and she never barked.  Also neglected, starved and probably handled very roughly.  She was the most wonderful dog in the whole world and I'm just sitting here having some bittersweet rememberances, all because of your sign-in name.  Thank you for reminding me of her.
