my 11 month old rottweiler pup wont carry her head when she goes round the show ring, she will stand loverly then when we start to move her head goes down, i cant get her attention with treats or toys, if anyone has any suggestions i would be greatful
we are new to showing and are enjoying it very much just having a few problems like any novice
many thanx
Do you mean her head level with her back and reaches out. My dalmatian does that she cant help it as she moves with drive. When we tried to keep her head up she padded around the ring like a poodle. (no offence to poodle owners) You can try holding a treat obove her to hold her attention but personally I am not keen. If her head is pointing towards the floor you could perhaps try talking to her and giving the lead a few sharp tugs.

Lots & lots of training & teaching a command to hold her head up(in a natural position of course) will help. I had a Beardie bitch that did the same so I went back to basics & used "head up"command whilst holding food at nose level & I trained her whilst she was hungry as she wasn't bothered otherwise. Interesting what being slightly hungry & the offer of food can persuade a dog to do

Hello, depends what you mean by down, a dog with good layback will drop its head on the move as it extends, upright shoulders however give a swan like look going around as the set on is different,. upright looks flashier but is incorrect for a breed requiring good shoulder angulation

Do you mean he drops his head to sniff the ground or is he just holding it low.

When moving her put her collar/chain right up under her chin. If you have a chain, put it on so that the large ring is underneath her throat, then you won't have to string the dog up to make it stay there. Then all you have to do use your lead with a tiny bit of tension when she drops her head. This is the kindest method I've found in 29 years of showing.
If you mean sniffing the ground then I would teach the 'head up' or 'no sniff's' command but a rottie will carry their head rather low (well level) naturally anyway, you should really let them position themselves on the move or go with the flow - with my boy I have hardly any tension on the lead as he follows my 'turn' commands, they should not look at you or hold their head right up as it miss places their shoulders / top line, try running a bit faster with her too, this normally get them going rather than plodding along interested in every hair on the floor LOL :)
Good luck ;)
thank you all for your advice
she is good @ most other things like turning ,standing, she just plods round the ring with her ears back and head down totally ignoring me looking sorry 4 herself, but i will give things a go see if she will look a bit more happier,
i tried quickening my pace and she wouldnt but never mind
thanx again to everyone
take care
