I was having a test run of the temperature in the whelping room which is our bedroom. It was only 70.7 degrees and to me like the tropics!!! We normally sleep with the window wide open and no heating even in mid winter ( by the way I live in Scotland)
The whelping box is a cardboard box with hood and we also have a heat pad. Do you think I could get away with 70 degrees in room if we use the haet pad.
Even so I think I will turn into a nudist for a few weeks ;-)

I do think you can get away with that just fine. I've done it both ways... 85 degree rooms and just plain old room temperature. Pups did fine in both but the ones that were started in the warmer room were still shivering in regular room temperature at six weeks old! Mom does a great job of snuggling up to the pups to warm them if they are at all cold. They are hardier (in my opinion) if they are raised in a normal room temperature. It is cold air or drafts that can chill a puppy... but I have even hear of pups being born outside in winter and doing fine because mom keeps them under her and they stay warm.
