We got our dalmatian puppy 3 weeks ago. Apart from a few 'wee' mistakes over the first few days, everything has been great. We've taken him outside every couple of hours.
Even at 03:00 every morning, one of us gets up and takes him out oin the back for quick toilet break.
Not once has he had a doo doo in the house. He sleeps in a home made pen, which has 1/2 of the floor covered in newspaper and the other half in Vetbed and blanket. Not once has he even gone on the paper, so we've been delighted.
Until today ...
This morning as usual, first one up, takes him out for a few minutes. It had been raining all night and was still raining heavily. Neither the dog or my daughter Christina were too keen to spend much time in the garden, well it was 06:45.
They came in again and all seeemed well
Then, "What's that smell" was the cry, yes a big pile of poo on the bedroom carpet... UGH!!
Then again this evening, another pile, but this time in the dining room. Luckily, we covered the whole floor here in plastic just in case, as this is his main area, or at least was until recently.
Why has he gone backwards !! from being a good boy or a real stinker ???
thanks
Toilet training a pup is one step forwards and two step back ! :) Our Boxer is 18 weeks old and is perfectly clean indoors - he rings a bell that we have put on the backdoor if he needs to go wee, poop or just to be nosey ! and has been doing this since he was about 12/13 weeks and has slept in our bedroom with our older dog for that long too and goes from 11 pm till 6.30 am with no accidents.
Before that he slept in a very large crate in our room and he didn't do anything in that as they won't want to - we would also have a week or no accidents in the house during the day to a few days of 'uh-oh, Dylan's done a jobby' in the hallway. When he did this we simply picked him up and popped him in the garden and said 'poo-poo' or 'wee-wee' and then cleared the 'mess' up with a biological cleaner without any fuss or telling him off. Sometimes we managed to catch him in mid flow so to speak and again quickly popped him in the garden with a 'wee-wee or poo-poo' command. We had to do this, like I say, until he was about 12 weeks and during this time we attached a bell (wind chime) on the back door and took him to it at regular times and made his nose ring the bell, said wee-wee etc and took him outside and every time he did his business we gave him a special treat. It worked and he started ringing the bell himself and now he bashes it with gusto (he's actually broken one of the tubes off it LOL).
The main thing to remember is to keep your cool and not make a big thing of his mistakes, just gentle correction and plenty of praise and treats (even if it is raining or cold). Like all dog training you will have good days and bad days but don't let the bad days cloud your judgement.
