We have our 5 month old golden on Royal Canin, maxi dog junior. When she came to us at 8 wks she was on the puppy version of this food and we have just progressed onto the next stage with it.

She seems to pick at her food quite alot and to be honest we are finding it a rather expensive food too.
Can anybody suggest a slightly cheaper alternative to this food?  We would like to keep her on a complete dry food.

She is given pilchards in tomatos a couple of times a week and also she loves apples and carrotts.
There have been occasions when she has had a few left over bits of meat from our dinners (she loves this whenits mixed in with the royal canin)

Our vet has suggested that we put her onto the Royal canin Lab/retriever variety soon, but as she picks at it we think that its a rather expensive waste (mind you, they do seel the royal canin at our vets, so perhaps they are on commision?!)

Royal Canin is a good quality food.  The other brands of the same quality will cost you around the same price. 

If you actually work out how much each meal costs, I think you will be surprised on how it compares to the cheaper ones or tinned food.  With the quality foods you don't have to feed so much and you don't have to pick up so much from the other end. ;)  Are you buying it in a 15k bag? That is the cheapest way to buy it.

If she is fussy, try adding a little Naturediet with it, it mashes up well and sticks to the food.  I have put Royal Canin in the microwave for a few seconds to bring the oils and smell out of it too, it seems to make it a bit more tasty.

I dont think you should be too fussed about what brand of food you feed your dog as long as the ingredients are good and has the right components of protein, fat etc for your breed of dog.  There is a lot of competition between dog food companies and just because 1 make has a lot of publicity doesnt mean its the only decent food around.

I think you should experiment with a few different foods to find one that is suitable for your dog, your pocket and one that your dog actually likes to eat!! (Ive had 1 dog on many many brands as she wouldnt eat and looked like a toast rack and is now at her fittest and healthiest on a very cheap complete food)

Hi, Goldies can become fussy and start to turn their noses up and try to get you to give them something else.I find if they dont eat it they are not offered something else, they eventually give up and realise this is what they are having :-)they won't starve themselves.Experiment but be careful about introducing food too soon and causing upset tummies and sometimes swapping with diffrent brands can cause your puupy to become fussy in hope you will keep buying something diffrent.
Contact your breeder and seek their advice.
Royal Canin is an excellent food.
