Thanks for all replies received. Although the advice is conflicting it is very useful to hear the views of other dog lovers. As Christine says, we were perfectly entitled to raise our concerns with our vet and I was very surprised at the unhelpful and negative attitude we encountered - particularly as our vet is well aware that our Wheaten Terrier died a few years ago following an adverse reaction to a sedative/booster vaccination combination. So yes I am seriously considering changing to another vet. There are many vets around but to me there will only ever be one Buddy - and I just can't risk losing him.
