can anyone help my motherinlaw has just phoned me and said her bitch (whos due to have her pups saturday) well this afternoon the bitches waters broke she was panting a bit but still nothings happenig do u think she ll have her pups tonight early as shes only due on saturtday

Thursday isn't early at all if she's due Saturday -the pups could have been born alreday at the beginning of the week and that would have been just as normal. :) Not sure what you mean about waters broke -this doesn't happen in dogs in the same way as it does in humans, you only get a gush of water just when a pup is born. Most bitches will pant and nest and pace for up to 36 hours before the puppies are actually born.

she said a gush of thick water came out, the boxer cleaned it up and that was it, no pups yet

Has she had any contractions? If there was a gush of water and contractions then I would worry as it may mean a puppy is stuck -like I said you don't usually see water until the pups are born, you see mucous beforehand.

shes been panting alot but thats it the water came out this afternoon
I think its best your mother inlaw gets her to a vet, is this the bitches first litter? and also has your mum inlaw delivered puppies before

this is her first litter yes she has delivered pups b4 but then the pups just came out no problems at all
What is the bitches temperature has anyone checked.
Hi what do you mean her waters broke, does she mean she has lost the plug.and also yes it is quiet normal for her to have her litter a couple of days early. I always count the first mating as one date then after second mating add two days on. how thick was the water? tell your mother inlaw to keep a eye on her bitch even if she goes outside for her be quicks as she could deliver a puppy.and might be as well to notify your vets just in case of emergency
good luck

A bitch does have her waters break and it sounds like that's what has happened.
Fluid does come with each pup - but there is also a lot of fluid that will come away at some point prior to or at the same time as the first pup being born.
Once the waters have broken - the bitch is in early stages of labour. The contractions / pups will follow within a few hours.
Hi redstaffy any news yet? hope everything is ok
I've never in 28 years known the waters to break and no pups be there. I hope all went well!

The fact that lots of you have never seen a bitches waters break prior to the 1st pup being born, I find most odd! :) I have seen it many times ;)

I never have as I said in 28 years, not with this much space in between, an hour or so but never days. As they say you learn something new every day :d
Hiya i had the same thing yesterday my bitches waters broke at about 12 pm yesterday and she had her first pup at 12.30pm and had 1 every 30 min or so she ended up have 7 but 1 was dead
So we have 6 all doing well
Her waters broke in the dining room and she was sitting in the living room still dripping from her i didnt think it was gonna happen as quick as it did
After the first 2 she didnt pant as much but they still came
So the waters do brake plus it says so in the book of the bitch it says that it can either come out in a sac filled with water or it can burst while still in the bitch
Hope all is well with your bitch let us know when pups are born but knowing me youve probably already had them lol if you have congratulations

not yet vet said very very slow labour the vet felt inside a pup might be big if she starts pushin and still nothin happens we have to take her back shes not tryin just sittin ther i will keep u all up to date thanks 4 everyones surport
Hi i had a litter in feb, and the bitchs water broke 3 days before she had them. after lots of trips to the vet and a lot of worry she had 6 lovery pups with no problems good luck warm regards debbie.
Hiyas red, just a thought if the vet examined your mother inlaws dog and thinking it was a big puppy possible the one that is causing the hold up is a white boxer as white boxer pups do seem to be larger than their litter brothers &sisters. possibly a Oxytocin injection may help.
good luck and please keep us all informed. oohh i love ickle boxer babesxxxx

Oxytocin can only be given once the bitch is in established labour. Giving it before then can be extremely dangerous.
Hi stackiestump ive had boxers for over 20yrs and never once has any of my bitches waters broke, yes they have lost there plug and then followed with a discharge, maybe mine are different lol
My bitches waters broke and it was a definite gush. The first puppy was born within 5 minutes of the waters breaking.
Taken from the Book of The Bitch:
The water bag may emerge and then retract a few times or it may burst higher up producing a gush of fluid contents. The water-bag does not contain a puppy, the membrane surrounds each feotus during gestation and serves to lubricate it's passage out.
I didn't see a sac, her waters must have broken higher up, but it was a gush not a trickle, pretty much like when a humans water breaks. I suppose that some bitches will only trickle and it wouldn't be as obvious.
