Topic Other Boards / Foo / Bump On Head....

Hi everyone......i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this??
My 6 year old bumped his head at school almost 3 weeks ago. It came up in a massive bump....sort of on the corner of his forehead. He was given an ice pack and i gave him calpol and kept an eye on him. The bump went down a bit by the next day and he had a big bruise. Well......he still has quite a substantial bump on his head and it is still a bit bruised. I was wondering if anyone knew how long it should take to go away??? I have made a doctors appointment for Monday to get it checked out, but i know that bumps on the head always take a bit longer to go down. It isnt bothering him, but i am getting a bit anxious. :-( Does anyone have any experience of this??
I am feeling a bit worried, because the school have just phoned to comment on how long the bump is taking to go away!! I told them he has an appointment for Monday, but do you think i should be worried???? :-(

My two boys were always bumping their heads I think the general rule is if the bump comes up and the bruising comes out that is good, and as long as he isnt sleeping more than usual, thats a good sign, have you got a walk in centre maybe pop in after school if you are worried waiting till Monday,or maybe A&E,but if he is playing fine and his usual self just keeping an eye on him should be ok, the school are probably jus being over cautious, not like the old days rub it better get on with it.If you notice any changes then get him to A&E if not im sure he is ok.
Zanta sends a hug...:-)

Thanks Lynn, i wasnt too worried until the school phoned up. He has had a LOT worse!!! A week after his 1st birthday, he got his finger caught in a door and the end came off!!! Now THAT was scarey!!!! He hasnt been acting any different really, but do you think that after 3 weeks, it should have gone away?? Maybe i'm just being a worry wart!!! ;-)

I got kicked in the leg on new years eve and although the bump came out in a bruise the actual lump didnt go until May

I did see a doctor and although he sent me for an x-ray he said it would be nothing to worry about.

I think we all worry over our children and I used to do the same take them to get it checked out and then realise I had wasted a couple of hours in A&E,but thats what good parents do,I am sure he is fine, but you will probably  worry till the Doctor tells you it is ok,Michael and Mark were always needing stitches for one thing or the other aswell, sounds like he is a typical healthy boy to me,like I say if you are really worried pop him to A&E.I think some bumps do take longer obviosly if it was a really hard bump it will take longer to go down.like I say I think the school are being maybe over cautious they are probably worried its worse than it is,did he do it at school ?

Sorry just seen in original post he did it at school, maybe they are concerned you might want to take it further or something and are being on their guard as it happened on the premises.

>>did he do it at school ?>>

Yes....he did it in the classroom!!! He says they were having a 'Friday Afternoon Party' and the boys were running about, then his friend pushed him and he fell onto the floor!! He said "my feet were off the ground and everything mummy!!", he was quiet chuffed. It must have been a VERY hard floor, because at first, the bump was HUGE!!! Typical boys.....yesterday his friend had a bleeding nose and the day before, another boy had a cut on his back!!

Mackleback, Thomas (my three yeard old) banged his head on my dining room table leg a few months ago now, it came up in a huge lump and he was nearly passing out, so we rushed him down to A+E the doctor looked at him straight away (by which time he had stopped rolling his eyes everywhere!!) the doc said it was nothing to worry about, but not to be suprised if he ended up with a black eye, he said the bump would drain down and so the blood (that causes the bruise) would sink down to his eyes, sure enough about 5 days later he had two lovely shiners and a huge lump on his forehead! It took about 3 weeks for the lump to go down completely, but it was getting smaller each day from about the 5/6th day he had it.

It is quite funny though because now when he frowns or raises his eyebrows you can still see where the lump was.

I am sure your son will be fine, but if you are worried just pop him down to A+E, bette to be safe than sorry, especially with head injuries. Good luck :)
