Topic Dog Boards / General / Raised dog feeders ??
- By Mellonz [in] Date 07.09.05 16:47 UTC
I am trying to find a raised feeder (single one if poss) for my IWH. He is currently 6 months old and is already 32" at the shoulders. Most of the raised feeders I have seen I don't think would be high enough for him. Just wondered if any giant breed owners could recommend suppliers?
Many thanks
:-)

Hi, the study on bloat at Purdue showed an increased incidence of bloat with raised feeding bowls.

Hi Jas
Really?
I thought the idea of raised feeders was to reduce the risk of bloat, that was why I wanted to buy one?

Yes, if you go to http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/bloat.htm and download the .DOC file 'Non-dietary risk factors for gastric dilatation volvulus in large and giant breed dogs' you will see the findings. Some people argue (particularly dane breeders/owners for some reason) and the numbers looked at are not that large.

When I got my first IW I was told not to feed at floor level because it would ruin the conformation of the forelegs. It was only later that raised feeding was recommened to prevent bloat. FWIW the forelegs thing didn't make any sense to me and so I started floor feeding. Later the bloat scare didn't make much sense to me either so I continued as before, though I worried until the Purdue results came out. Touch wood, I've not had a bloat and the only one of my pups that has was raised fed.

Hi, I have raised bowls for my 6 month old Mastiff. There is a lot of conflicting advice about bloat, so it is best to do some research and make up your own mind. :-) I read a lot of info and decided that i would use the raised bowls, if anything, it is certainly more comfortable for my pup rather than him bending to eat from the floor. HTH :D

I agree mackleback, there is alot of conflicting evidence it seems that it doesnt matter if you raise the bowls or not your dog is just as much prone to it. I raise my boys bowls (Irish Setters) purely because it looks so much more comfortable for them :)

I got mine from luxway, im sure they must have a website :)

I've been looking into research on bloat recently, mainly because my dog had this happen whilst on holiday last week, thankfully she is ok. Both my leos have raised food bowls, bowls on buckets to be precise, but I am led to believe its events directly before/after feeding that cause bloat. For example too much exercise, jumping around, excitement etc on a empty/full tummy. The vet told us that he had a gsd the week before who got bloat simply by running up the stairs straight after eating, no raised bowls, when he got to the top of the stairs he bloated, it was a quick as that! My own vet was also suprised to hear about the raised bowl findings when I told him.  I still feed them from raised bowls but make sure they have been motionless, i.e. sleeping, for at least an hour before I offer either of them their food. And I pray I never see this happen again :(

Well thank you all for your comments, certainly interesting issue. He does currently have a bowl on a bucket but I think I might still with a raised feeder as he does appear much more comfortable for him to eat at a height without having to bend right down.
Thanks everyone!

I read somewhere once that someone who had two dogs, one was fed from a stand and one from the floor (dont know why) had both dogs suffer from Bloat! My thoughts are that if your dog is going to get bloat, its going to get it no matter how you feed them! I feed from stands! As it does seem so much more comfortable for them :)

I feed my newfie/berner from a raised food bowl not only because of the worry of bloat but because it looks more comfortable,Zantas breeder has never had bloat in her newfies or berners and feed first and excersises an hour later, she did say to keep a bottle of gaviscon in the cupboard incase she shows signs of bloat it gives them vital time while getting to the vet,she has done a lot of research.

I have a raised bowl that I bought for my last dog and now the staffie eats out of that. Its also good as it holds food in it, so no need for bags to be hidden. Our pup likes eating in the garden, and she has her bowl raised on a couple of bricks and that does the same job.
