Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / 11.5yr boxer with U.T.I & enlarged womb
- By Guest [gb] Date 06.09.05 10:13 UTC
hi i've just had my old girl to the vet (yesterday).& been told that her womb is enlarged, she's got an unrianry infection, she also been drinking huge amounts of water & peeing constantly & occaisonally theres 's an odd smell from her breath.(diabeties has been ruled out as i took a sample in with me),also getting her dressed is not an option due to her age. my vet has put her on clindacyl tab 75mg twice a day( i cant find out any info on these tabs so can anybody help or is there a more common name for these  so that i can look up for side effects etc.)the vet said she might be on these for the rest of her days if they help.ANY advise would be much appreciated.(i've to take her back to the vets in two weeks) .Thanks Car.

Has your Vet mentioned pyometra??????

Here's info about clindacyl

Iwould get her spayed, modern anasthetics are a lot less risky than they used to be.  Has she any heart problems or any other problems, if not 11.5 years is not htat old.  an enlarged womb would point to infection and this is more likely to cause ill health even if it seems to be under control as the toxins will be causing problems aroudn teh body.

I found this in google. Has she a vaginal discharge? I would suspect pyometra, which can be fatal if not treated. The surest cure is spaying; keep a close eye on her because if this is what it is, she could become toxic very quickly.

yes pyometra was mentioned but vet said because of her age he doesnt want to spay her he thinks shes too old,her heart is okay got that checked.
- By Val [gb] Date 06.09.05 11:08 UTC
Golly, enlarged womb, drinking excessively - classic pyometra!  I would have asked for her to be spayed yesterday! :(
If your Vet isn't confident in his ability to administer an anasthetic to a thoroughly tested bitch, then I would consider finding a Vet who was - and PDQ too! :(

val i know but vet is reluctant said shes too old,hes confident but said he doesnt want to put her through that, but i will ask again

OK!  Fingers crossed for you. :)

Back in 1981 I had to have my 11 1/2 year old BC with a bad heart(leaking valves)spayed when she had a closed pyrometra

She bounced back & managed another 5 years of very active life.

If she had left she would have died in agony as the womb when removed weighed 7 pounds & totally full of pus & on the point of rupture

I also had an 8 year old yorkie, Daisy who died of this.  The vet totally misdiagnosed her and sent us off after giving her a steroid injection.  A week later I took her back and she had emergency surgery and her womb was removed over a pound in weight with pus (a lot for a little yorkie).  :-(  Daisy never pulled through the operation and died at the vets with no one with her.

I would say to take your girl back and ask again.  I hope that she makes a good recovery.

I had a 12yrs old mongrel spayed due to a pyo and she lived until she was 18, if she is healthy, get her spayed. I know I would not hesitate if any of my present dogs had a suspected pyo, they would be done a.s.a.p.

My parents' cairn had Pyo at 14, she had the op and lived till eighteen and a half, she came back from the op as if rejuvenated :)

My Terv had pyo at 10 and a half and bounced back ... if it IS pyo, her life is at risk anyway..... :(

Best wishes, hope things go well

taking her to another vet for a second opinion on saturday
- By Dawn-R Date 07.09.05 10:07 UTC
Oh Caramac, Saturday is a long time away when you are talking about Pyometra. I would not be happy to leave it that long, with Pyometra, every hour counts. I'm hoping for the best for you. :)

Years ago I had an Irish Setter spayed with closed pyo, she died of septicaemia the next day without regaining consciousness. I'm sorry if I'm frightening you, but this really is an emergency.

Please listen to everyone if it is pyo and get to the vet before saturday.  My white boxer had been below par and i had booked an appointment at the vets for her that evening.  I noticed a brown discharge coming from her and i rushed her to the vets there and then.  The vet said had i left it until i had finished work she would probably have died.  She was 11 years old and the operation was a success giving us another two and half years together.

I also had an Irish Setter with it many years ago.  There were no tell tale signs she was just not right in my opinion, the vets said he would have a look and it turned out to be closed pyo, again luckily the op was a succes she was six at the time and we had nearly another ten years with her.

So please even if it isn't get back to the vet, they are not always right as i have just found out to my cost with Muppet my Irish Setter who died of gastric torsion on the 1st August.  I took her in the early hours of the morning to the emergency service and was told it was not bloat (common name) just a stomach upset, she died later that same day, my vets having operated immediately because it turned out it was bloat, this time i was not lucky and she died on the operating table of heart failure because of too many toxins having been released into the blood stream and her great heart could not cope with it.  That is something i will have to live with because had i been more insistant she probably would have made it.

Get her to the vets as long as she's a healthy 11 year old there shouldn't be a problem.  I'm going to have my almost 12 year old done after her season that she's having now, though there again she does act like a 12 month old and not a 12 year old so I don't have the same worry as some people may have with a dog of this age.

I've seen a dog suffer with pyo (my old girls mum) and it wasn't nice.  Luckily for her the antibiotics did work but it doesn't work vry often for many dogs.

Is there any news?

If she does have pyometra, I wouldn't wait, I can't understand vet reluctance as really there is no option (to my knowledge).

I truly feel so sorry that we're all saying completely the opposite to your Vet.  It must be very confusing but with the symptoms that you describe, I'm really surprised at his treatment. :(

Any news????
- By Bengidog [gb] Date 11.09.05 21:48 UTC
I had my 15 yo rescue yorkie spayed in March.  She is still absolutely fine and was jumping around a day later.

Your bitch needs seeing to immediately.  Find another vet asap.
