Topic Dog Boards / General / Two bitch's??
- By Cockerhouse [gb] Date 07.09.05 11:05 UTC
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I will ask again.  A chap at work is considering having 2 bitches from the same litter (shizu's) he already has a Golden retriever bitch, do you think it's a good idea?????

No, I'd say it's a very bad idea. Two pups at the same time (whether they're from the same litter or not, or the same gender or not) are four times the work of one.

Depends how experienced and dedicated he is.   I agree 2 pups are very hard work.  I have a 7 month old and 12 week old, but I at least twice a day take them in the garden seperatly and most times they are walked seperatly.  Thier play fighting can get out of hand at times etc etc.  Then for 2 the same age housetraining can take longer.
On the plus side they do have each other to snuggle up to at night, although thats no garruntee they won't still cry.
I am happy with my two close together but then I've had dogs for 30 odd years, bred and shown and trained them so i knew what to expect.  But some times of the day do seem hard work still.  In the end I know it will be fabulous.
Not something I would reccomend without knowing the pitfalls first and being sure you have the time and patience and can give them individual time.

Apart from the hard work, there is a much higher risk of two bitches ending up fighting if they are of the same age. In my experience it's harder to get bitches to get along than dogs, so that's another thing to consider.

Bad idea!  I wouldn't let two pups from the same litter go to the same home.

Its hard enough with one puppy....  why do you want double trouble?

No, don't do it. I had 2 boys from different litters but the same age, and (possibly aided by the new bitch puppy) they now cannot be left on their own together. I have heard bitches can be even worse if they fight, so don't ever do it! Get one, then if he wants another wait 2 or 3 years.

My grandfather had 2 male labs from the same litter and they've always been great with each other, although they were v.hard work when young.  He sent them off to one of these residential training schools when they were about a year old and that made a huge difference as I think he was really struggling with their training, lead pulling etc.  They are 7 now though and a fab pair of dogs :)  I wouldn't do it though.  I've got a 7yo dog and a 12 week old pup who are getting on wonderfully, but I know I'd really struggle if it was 2 pups.

Why doesn't he consider getting one pup now and then a second one when that one is about 2.

I recall our milkman buying a whole litter of Cocker Spaniels in one go.He bought 7 ,the whole lot.He housed them in a garden shed converted to kennels and then he went on to show them but with little success.I should imagine he would have been too exhausted to gain success!! Can you imagine what possessed the breeder to let go the whole litter to 1 person in 1 go.The poor bitch must have been distraught. I can see them now in my minds eye all running around the Yard he had like a snowstorm. How they managed I just do not know! I asked him why he bought the lot and he said that his wife failed to choose 2,so that clinched the idea.

Thanks for your replies, I have passed them on to him to seriously think about it, I have tried my hardest to deter him.  To be honest it's not him that wants them it's his daughter that wants one and then wants to give the other one to her sister as a 18th birthday present (this weekend).  She has sent a deposit onto the breeder and she is planning to go and purchase them Saturday.  I just hope the breeder refuses to sell two to her, it would be a big mistake for them and the puppies, but some people just won't listen to poeple with sound advice.  Thanks again.
