Hi I agree totally but I had a one pet litter and know all mine went to loving homes and had all the relevant health checks and gthe pedigrees were checked for suitabilty for the breed and colour :) There are some one time breeders that do it the right way :) We maybe the minority :)
There is a bigger problem in Eire than here which is absolutley abmismal (sp)

And the majority of those that are put to sleep are here in Northern Ireland. Given that our population is about 1.5 million people as opposed to about 55 million in the rest of the UK, our record is truly awful. I'm ashamed for my country :(

I think that should be 8,000 a year - not a day :)

No 8000 a day
You are not serious surely about 8000 a day?
Mind you the Blue X did a survey about 2 years ago, asked 3 questions why owners were giveing the dog to rescue, one third replied to the question "could not cope with animal" anyway rescues let very little out unless it helps some income campaign, many say they never PTS, I dont believe it and their papers are not public, of papers of that are kept which other than "To stop uneccesary suffering" lets face it, "We do not PTS" brings in sympathy money.

I thought it said 150 dogs a day, which is still too too many IMO.

Apologies...just found this...However its still 8000 dogs per year too many
150 DOGS KILLED EVERY WEEK IN THE UK
New survey reveals shocking reality of life and death for man's best friend
150 stray dogs are put to sleep every week by local authorities simply because their owner can't be traced or new homes can't be found, according to a survey conducted by Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity.
The survey, compiled by NOP World on behalf of Dogs Trust, reveals that over 105,000 stray dogs were collected by local authorities in the last year. This means that every five minutes, somewhere in the UK a dog goes stray, and that almost 300 dogs are lost or abandoned every day.
Almost 8,000 of these dogs were put to sleep because their owner could not be traced or a new home could not be found for them*. This equates to 21 dogs destroyed every day, and 150 every week.

Unfortunately it's not just pet litters and puppy supermarkets ... it's not exclusive to them, it's all dogs.
Anyone who breeds dogs for any reason whatsoever, has to take a little responsibility for this problem. :(
I saw a figure on dogs trust which said 105,000 to rescue every year, thats in conflict with something on I think ITV 6 oclock news earier this year which stated that 100,000 'difficult to home' dogs were in rescues each year.

Dogs have to be bred...you wouldn't have your pets otherwise BUT there are responsible breeders who take lifelong responsibilty for their pups, taking back any dog bred at whatever stage of its life and irresponsible ones who couldn't care less...these are the ones who breed 99% of the dogs who end up in rescue

The thing is the news agencies are reliant on their researchers who do not know about what is real life is or a related subject :)
Typical example when GMTV have a 'sad dog story'
Lets look at this sad story about some ''''''golden''' Labrador puppies. '''''arent they cute'''' ,....... bla bla :)
