Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hydroma???

My 14 month old border terrier has recenly had a lump removed and the vet seemed to think it was a hydroma (think that was what he called it)  The lump was removed and tested (nothing sinister) and there is still a slight swelling (the hydroma). I have seen on the net that these are usually on large breed dogs and of course a border terrier is not large.  Just wondering if anyone else has knowledge of them and does this swelling go down in time.  Thanks, shaz

Could it be a hygroma? And was it on the elbow?

Yes it could have been that, it was at the top of her leg, sort of the outside of her arm-pit.

In that case I've had the problem in IWs. You do get a bit of swelling after surgery but it will gradually go down. Hygromas can come back though I've never had one do so. In giant breeds they are usually caused by the dog lying on a hard surface so if your BT does this try and get him to lie on something soft. Another way of treating them is to inject steroids into the hygroma. Some of them will also  go away on their own once the cause is removed. HTH
