My bitches vulva almost always looks sore. She has been checked for infections even C herpes and all comes back clear. She has been mated several times but is very difficult as I assume she is very sensitive being sore.. She has not as yet produced a litter either. Do bitches suffer from thrush or anything similar ?

Just out of interest, why would you mate a bitch that is obviously sensative? Also if you don't know what the problem is, how do you know it won't effect any of the puppies?

As I say, just out of interest :D

If I did not think she had a lot to offer in health and conformation I would not be attempting it. My vet has not come up with any physical reasons for this.Despite my own 28 years experience I do not assume "I know everything" I know breeders have a wealth of knowledge to share, hence the question.

Sorry, I wan't being funny, just getting maybe a bit too interested!!!

I have no plans of breeding now or in the future, but it is a subject that interest's me, so I like to know the ins and outs :D I am sure someone will be along to offer their advice soon...

Nat :D

Maybe this should be in the breeding section maybe Admin could move this if they feel appropriate?

Hi Evelynn it could be vaginitis or vaginal hyperplasia, does she lick it all the time?  and what do you mean by sore?  is it swollen?  is there any discharge?  What colour is it?  is she in any discomfort?
If your vet can't find a reason you might be better getting a second opinion from another vet.

Warm regards Susan

She is not swollen, and does not pay particular attention to it unless in season when she does lick herself. She has had several types of antibiotics but nothing seems to help. In fact the best result I get is from sudocrem nappy rash cream which seems to take the redness down for a while. I have just mated her again and if history repeats itself and we don't get to the bottom of this (pardon the pun) I may have to get a second opinion as you suggest.

just wondering if herpes virus might cause this?   I don't know, just throwing the idea in.

Herpes virus was my last test and it came back negative hence my continuing on to mate her. I have heard though that this can happen but the bitch may still have the virus ,is this correct? If so what would my next move be?

Hi Evelyn i'd go to a different vet there's obviously something wrong if it's inflammed, i can't help you much but if Brainless, jeangenie or moonmaiden or one of the others sees your post i'm sure they'll be able to help you.  I wouldn't be suprised if thats stopping her from getting court.

Warm regards Susan

my staff puppy has had vaginal discharge for weeks now and had 3 courses oa antibiotics now it is green in colour and only happens when urinating. it does not bother her or hurt her so could this be the same as you talk about vaginitis?
- By evelyn [gb] Date 06.09.05 17:09 UTC
She doesn't have a discharge which I am glad .She's a mystery!

I wonder if this could be an imbalance in the natural flora, or even in the hormones, and this is contributing to the fertility problems.  If breeding from this bitch is crucial, and there is no family history of such problems I would get her to a reproductive specialist, now.  If it was the herpes virus then there is a vaccine that has to be given at specific times after mating and during pregnancy.
