Hi there,
I only re-joined an hour ago and have posted 4 or 5 topics aready! LOL
But I just wanted to know what your opinions are on clothes and accessories for dogs are?
There is a site called: www.petlondon.com which has everything from snazzy collars to little shoes and huddies!
Let me know your thoughts!
Ashleigh

As far as I'm concerned, the majority of dogs have their own coats and shouldn't need anything else! The only exceptions I'd make would be for sick or elderly dogs, those stuck in a draught on a showbench, or the hairless breeds.
If people want something to dress up, I'd recommend a Barbie! :D
:)
yeah, I agree.
I would probably get Max a top for winter though. Not that he would keep it on long!
LOL
Did you have a look at that website I posted before?
Barbie LOL yeah nice one!
oh, and really dont agree with these people who paint there dogs claws! I saw one, a poodle (dog), with a PINK bow in his hair and PINK nail varnish!!

My own view, and it's only a personal one, is that i don't really enjoy seeing dogs dressed up. I feel it's making jokes out of them. I don't mind the odd silly shot of a dog wearing Xmas antlers, but can't bear seeing dogs dressed as babies, tarts, bikers, etc...
Nothing wrong with a dog wearing a jacket to keep warm, though :)

Hi Ashleigh
Thought i'd let you know my thoughts. I could live with a snazzy collar if i had a small breed doggy that was female. I've got a male large breed.
Coats.... mmmm whats the point when a dog has fur, somedays i wish i had their coats :p
Shoes... are now yes this i could

IF they are called booties and are designed/made to be worn by sled dogs running through the snow and ice, but i dont suppose those on that site are  Oh well never mind :D
thank you for your opinions.
I agree that if you see the odd shot of them in funny stuff then thats ok.
But some people just take it too far!!

I have beardies and have boots for them when we are going to a show.... having to walk through mud to get inside my dogs have very long fur on thier feet which on a normal day I would leave to dry and brush off so sometimes it is necessary and funnily enough they seem to like them as they run off when I try to remove them.I also have foul weather coats not for warmth just to keep them dry on really really bad days.
Other than that I dont enjoy seeing dogs dressed up at all and wont take part in fancy dress either.

I think putting a staffie in a jumper or coat will look ludicrous, in fact, any dogs in clothes looks silly. I understand that some really small dogs need them, but on the whole, not something I would ever consider.
I have a 11wk old newfie and wouldnt dream of putting her in any sort of clothes.I think those bibs look rather silly at shows too...:p
Well I am really sad because I have seen this mega cute little santa outfit in a christmas catalogue which I was seriously getting as a christmas present for Charlotte and beagie :(

Please please please don't do it. If you want a "doll" to dress up, go buy one, and leave your dog happy in his natural coat. :(
Oh lighten up for gods sake. We are talking about a bit of fun with a dog dressed up for a little while. What self respecting dog is going to prance around all day in a silly outfit.

You said it yourself TTS - "what self respecting dog is going to prance around all day in a silly outfit".........

Im sure it wouldnt hurt for a bit of fun at christmas
Its the muppets that dress their dogs all year round like they are a baby that annoy me. I saw a staff at a campsite the other week with a football shirt on just to go for a walk - now that is sad :(
They're dogs - they bark, they sniff, they fart, they smell, they love you unconditionally and they have a lovely coat be it short, long, wirey or silky of their own and there is nothing I like more than seeing a beautiful glossy coat of 'fur' - lets give them some dignity and keep them as dogs and not, as said before, barbies :)

My two would actually pack their spotted hankie and leave home if I so much as put a t-shirt near them :)
With the slob my 10 month newf creates a bib would be a godsend :)
I still cant find a plastic one with a drip tray at the bottom......but I will continue to search :D

They sell bibs at shows especially for newfs - thats not dressing up, thats a necessity :)

I do have to disagree on the Staffy not wearing a coat! My boy feels the cold up here in the North of Scotland in the winter!! He has a waterproof fur lined coat that he wouldn't go for a walk without when it gets cold. You try telling Buster he'll have to be wet and cold, cos he'll look silly otherwise!!

I think as long as the dog don't have a double coat which makes it very hot when someone dresses the dog up. The dog doesn't where it for long lengths of time and doesn't mind... there's no harm in it at all. Come on a doggie just looks so sweet in a t -shirt. ;) Not sure about hats though, I've never known a dog that's liked wearing a hat. I should know I have tryed. :D
That site is a bit ODD though lol However I like the carriers on wheels ;)

Theres practicality too some of us with long coated breeds cant always have the time to get the hairdryer out and everyday use isent that good for the coat either so its much easyier to put a dogcoat on :) Im not sure I agree with dressing the dogs up with other things :P but as long as the dog is well cared and loved I dont care if its walking about in a pink frilly what ever :P
Hmmm well
If it's for medical reasons then sure you'll see the odd dog in a t-shirt or the odd foot boot to try and protect
the area from more damage...
My dogs do have coats for exactly the same reasons as supplied above - they are shown and so sometimes
being stuck in a drafty area isn't much fun for them and they do get cold. ~Or if you are at a winter show and the dogs
are kept in the car and it's freezing outside.
I also have a coat which has flectalon which was used for my veteran dog who suffered with arthritis etc in her later
years. This coat also now gets used if I've got a dog that just come home after an operation etc as it keeps
them warm.
They aren't fancy just waterproof & warm no burberry here :)
Then the other fancy accessory I have is for the summer I have a cool n dry dog towel for each of the girls
to keep them cool whilst in the show ring. But can't really be described as clothes though.
Other than that they have the plain leather half check collars, but I do have the reflective collars (bought from £1 shop)
for the winter/dark months. Which are used in addition to their normal collars.
A friend with a whippet has a knitted woollen coat for him to be kept warm and something that looks a bit like a scarf
but it's circular and keeps the neck warm. But whippets have got thin skins.
Don't really like the 'clothes' that they have for the petite breeds of dog though....but then if there's money to be
made and a market for these things they'll keep making them...............

I used to be anti dog clothes but at the end of the day if the dog doesn't object and the owner is a fool to pay out the ludicrous prices then who are they hurting?
My sister has a CKCS - ok, she has only bought her some very pretty coats suited for wet or very cold conditions - but Tinkerbell really likes wearing them infact she gets excited if they come out of the cupboard.

I just bought my Dobe a coat for winter. Last winter was his first and on walks whenever we stopped at traffic lights etc, I could see his thighs shivering in the cold! The coat I've got him is just a plain dark blue with a reflective strip across the front which I thought was handy as we'll be going for his last walk of the day in the dark come winter. I expect we'll also be going for many walks in the rain so I'd prefer it if he was kept dry rather then be walking around drenched for 2 hours.
Personally I think coats are a really good idea for short-haired dogs, or those sick or elderly. I can also see how they can be practical for keeping long-haired dogs clean before shows etc. I guess also some breeds of dogs were originally designed for different climates to where they now live.

Snazzy collars are something cute and just an ordarany collar with extra glitter!!!! You have to have one on your dog so why not make it snazzy if you want/can afford!!!
All ours have a coat (boy's get one of countrymun, girls got a cheeper one) for rainy walks. old boy and yougest girl with bad hips wear them whenever it's slightly wet, all of them have it if it's a heavy rain or after baths!!!!
Any other clothes (hats, jumpers, hoddies, etc) are taking the micky out of dogs IMO! Would you dress a little child in a tutu and walk it down the round for ammusement?
>Would you dress a little child in a tutu and walk it down the round for ammusement?
sadly people do, have you seen the "cutsie" teddy bear outfits for babies :(

And what harm are they doing? I hate to see toddlers & babies with pierced ears but people still do it and those dreadful fluffy feathered headband things...yeugh... but each to their own!
I, personally, would never put even a waxed jacket on any of my Munsters even my 14.5 year old but if those with smaller dogs feel the necessity to buy them apparel then it's up to them, at worst all it does is offend the eye if you are so against them.

no harm, other than making their babies look absolutely stupid :(

You know I can't see the point of this thread, dog apparel exists, some people enjoy buying items for their dogs - so be it. But it certainly isn't harming the dog, any person or the enviroment and probably gives the owner a lot of enjoyment and most of the canine models too! :D
It takes allsorts to make a world and if we all liked the same thing etc etc etc.! ;)

*has amusing mental image of a Chav walking down the street in a hoodie and a fake burberry baseball cap with staffie in matching apparell*
Only joking Ashleigh, I don't think that's you for one moment! I think it's all personal taste. A snazzy collar - yes... a pink tutu - no! If I had more money than sense, my little old shar-pei would look gorgeous in a sparkly pink collar and matching pink flexilead from that site. However, she'd far rather have forty quid's worth of pigs ears and tripe sticks.
