- By mygirl [gb] Date 05.09.05 19:45 UTC
I was going to drive but just can't face the journey and would you believe its actually hardly any difference time wise if i take the train (about 20mins extra due to changing)

Its going to be Arriva Trains Wales, Virgin trains then Central trains does anyone know if its ok to take a dog? and its a large breed dog not a titchy one to put on a lap :(

Thanks.

As far as i know well behaved dogs are allowed on most trains. The train company would be able to confirm this for you.

Thanks liberty i've found some info and its looking a bit dodgy as he is so big and could be an inconvienience to fellow passengers and i guess you have to think of the safety aspect oh hum :(

You can arrange to stay with him near the guards carriage as there is normally plenty of room where people put their bikes and pushchairs etc. Might be worth pre booking it :)

How big is he ?

It allows you to take two dogs per person on the train, and they go fre of charge.  I have travelled with as many as three with one of the kids, or a friend.

I am going on my own its a much much much needed break and he's my youngest g.dane.
I just don't want to get stuck in Birmingham (half way) and get chucked off as there was no guard carriage or there was a bus (due to whatever).

We carry our 3 chis on the trains lots of time, going to Cornwall and Ireland etc for holidays.

I have taken Abby on the train as long as they are well behaved I was told it was ok.

Well I suppose my 3 would make one Great Dane.

I always try and find the place for wheelchair users.  So long as a disabled person doesn't need it this gives you a bay with no table and a single folding seat so has floor room and more importantly the dog is visible so less likely to be trodden on.

You would never get a Dane under one of the tables because of the table legs and the fact the seats have arms that are fixed.

Mygirl, my friend takes her leonberger on the train. She stands between carriages though as it is only a short journey from here to B'Ham. But yes dogs are allowed on the trains, and they go free.

Hi yes dogs are allowed on trains and also they travel free of charge. I took one of my girls on a train last year it was only a short distance though and i wasnt charged for her and neither did we have to go in guard room, Having said that she is a boxer so isnt a large breed.

I travel all the time to shows on the train and so long as the dog does not sit on the seat the train companies are more than happy.
I have a small breed and normally crate them in the disabled area if available.
I see plenty of large breeds on the train with no probs.
In fact, last year I was travelling from Preston to Aberdeen and the train was packed to the gunnells. A youngish lad had a reserved seat and once he fought his way through the crowd saw it was occupied by a Great Dane, tut, tut!!
and choose the sit in the end aisles as the dog was settled!!
Bad move Virgin Trains for allowing the dog on the seat :-) :-)
