I adopted a beautiful Siberian Husky from a rescue centre, and their vet spayed her. I didn't feel they had done a very good job as the wound was uneven, red and very sore. My own vet removed the stitches 2 weeks ago and said she was probably allergic to them. Sure enough she started to heal very nicely. Then last Wednesday night I noticed it was red and inflamed, with the skin looking stretched and vulnerable, and the next day the skin was broken and the wound was weeping. I rushed her back to my vet, who has prescribed antibiotics, however her weeks course is nearly up and today the wound looks worse - it has been bleeding (stopped now) and there is a visible hole about 2mm wide. I will be heading to my vet again tonight but wondered whether anyone else has had this problem? I know it sounds like there is a problem with her internal stitches, but is there ANYTHING I can do to ease her discomfort? She is outwardly happy, healthy and alert thankfully, but is biting at herself as if she is itching. Would human variety Fucidin cream help?
hi ive had similar probs with my 6mth rottie,i have just returned from the vets myself.he thinks the problem could be internal, but has gave her antibiotics hoping these will help and its not internal.if i was you i would wait until you see your vet before applying anything, but i do know you can bathe it with salt water and this helps(not to much salt though).but you do need to get her straight to the vet though.keep us posted.
Thanks for your concern and advice. When I got home she had deteriorated further so took her to my vet who has now operated on her to re-do the (in my opinion dreadful mess) spay originally done before I had her. The wound is FAR cleaner and the stitches tight and even, unlike that left by the initial vet. The infection had gone so deep that they had to cut away some of her muscle so she is being rested and is on antibiotics, anti inflammatories and painkillers. The moral of this story is: even if your dog hasn't completed her antibiotic course, if your instinct tells you your dog is still unwell and their symptoms are getting worse, not better - go to your vet!! Luckily my vets are sound and I trust them implicitly, and whilst they are too professional to lay blame, it appears that there were an incredible amount of complications in what should have been a very routine operation for the other vet. Thanks again, Maya is now on the road to recovery and should be out chasing squirrels again in no time.
