Silly question I know, but how do you train a name so your pup pays attention to you when you call it?
I understand how all other reward training works (recall, sit, stay, wait, down etc) and feel completely ready for the arrival of our new pup BUT no behavioural books give you the absolute basic - how to get the pup to recognise his name and pay exclusive attention to you when you call it?
I think I am just being thick but any help would be great
They just get to know their name from everytime you call them, play with them etc. Have to admit though, Blue dont get called Blue that often, My dogs and cat get allsorts of nicknames!! Blue is also known as Bluebaloo and Blobalob, dont ask why! LOL These names are normally called in a high pitched voice aswell, then shortly after you see a Big clumsy pup come skidding round the corner! Hahaha!!
He also has a variety of names for when his been not so good! :D
Other's may have better advice because I have only read this, but something I read a while ago said that if you at every chance you get say his/her name over and over to them, they will just cotton on, so instead of saying e.g. Good boy!!! You say good boy "Rufus", when you put his dinner down call him by his name or stroke him and say his name, when you are playing and he comes to you, say his name!! Just every chance you get, apparently it will also help his re-call if as he is coming to you anyway, you make a real good fuss and say his name over and over :D Obviously whenever you have said his name and he comes or looks at you, praise and treat and praise a bit more :D NEVER call him to you to punish him in any way, and it did say right in the very beginning don't call him to you if you know there is no way he will come i.e. when he is eating, or playing with someone else, as this will teach him it is OK to ignore you sometimes, this is what would need to be built on slowly so you get to the point where he will take notice of you no matter what he is doing or where he is. :D

Here is some training stuff I read that seemed to make a lot of sense to me. Similar to what Natalie1212 posted.
You do NOT say your dog's name over and over unless there is some specific reason for you to do so. The idea in the article was that your dog will soon learn to ignore it's name if nothing doggy is associated with it's name. So you say, Fido SIT and give immediate treat after the sit. Saying Fido is to catch his attention. Follow right away with the action you want and right away with the reward. You want Fido to look at you and wait for your command when you say his name. You do NOT want Fido to come to you when you say his name. When you want him to come it's Fido, Come, then reward, which can be the fussing up or a treat. And you only say his name once. The article said to be careful NOT to use the dog's name when you are talking about him, for instance telling DH what smart things Fido did during the day.
Hello!
