I'm REALLY REALLY pleased with myself and my son today :D

I have an ancient dinosaur of a PC - an Amstrad MEGA PC 386 which we put away 6 years ago as it wasn't working and no-one would even look in its direction let alone repair it :(   Having a clear out we discovered it again and I thought I'd see if it would boot up.  NO chance, the operating system was missing.  Phoned the Local PC Docs and was told very politely that it was impossible to repair and the skip was too good for it   Well you know about red rags and bulls....:D

We dug out the old Dos book and disks and I got to work (think blind man looking for a needle in a haystack at midnight ;) )  stopped to make lunch and turned around to a shout of "Look mam - HUGO JUNGLE OF DOOM!!"  yes my seven year old had done the impossible and written in the right dos code to start it, clever boy :)   We still couldn't do anything else with the Darn PC tho - Bad Command ruled :(

But armed with the knowledge that old HUGO was working I battled on and now its FIXED, Completely, better than it worked 6 years ago before it conked out!!   He's so excited to have his "own" PC with Windows, Works, Art programmes  etc.  and Games (he loves HUGO and Gorillas in dos) and he loves the Mega Drive Games (greendog is a fave)
And I'm pleased that the old grey stuff is still working ok :D :D   Being at home all day you do begin to wonder if its all still there :D :D :D

Terrific! It gives me hope that our first PC (gosh, we were proud) with all 250 wotsits might have more use than a doorstop ...

LOL

JG - it was our first computer too and yes we were so very proud of it :)  Rightly so, its still a good computer and does everything the new one does - but on a smaller scale :D  It still has windows works on it tho, and some other really good programmes :D

Icequeen,

Its a choice at the moment between Paleantologist (sp) archaeologist, computer programmer, spy (like JB ;) ) teacher and Binman   He's keeping his options open LOL :D :D :D

Danielle, I'll see if he's got time after school tomorrow, if he can stay awake :)

Good to hear that you have such a useful son - when do you start hireing him out? Amstrads are starting to be worth something so hang on to it, could be an antique of the future.
