My partner has just bought a puppy newfoundland from a breeder in Camarthenshire-he is worried it is a puppy farm.

Do they breed more than just Newfies? Do they have lots of breeds??
It's always recommended to buy a puppy from a specialist breeder.
Hi,i think she just breeds newfies, our puppy isnt kc reg as she said it was an 'accident'.
Our puppy is very healthy and we had her checked over by our local vet yesterday and was given a clean bill of health.
Our suspicion was aroused by going online and looking on info' on puppies-this lady hardly asked any questions about us and our family.
The puppys parents were there and mother was'nt in very good condition-the lady said this was due to just having a litter
our puppy is 10wks old.
The web-site we saw her ad' on has now got another one on with 7 more puppies for sale.

Newfies suffer from a number of health problems. Were the Sire and Dam hip scored?? The BMS is 27 :( I believe that they should have elbows scored too. The Newfoundland Club is encouraging heart testing. This link may be of interest. http://www.thenewfoundlandclub.co.uk/health_&_longevity.htm
I think that I've found the ad that you mean - I wonder why it was the first site that I would look for unregistered pups?:( Must say that's a lot of money for an unregistered puppy. A health checked, well bred, Kennel Club puppy would be similar!
Hi,
Yes the parents had been hip scored.
yes i know-we feel very stupid.
our puppy is lovely-i just hope we dont have problems with her in the future.

The second advert also doesn't mention health tests, Kennel Club reg, nor accident - but still the same price??!!
Fingers crossed is probably about as good as it gets at this late stage. :(
the house was very small, she had 8 dogs!
7 of which were newfies and was very dirty and smelly,my partner wanted to rescue our pup!on the pos side she is toilet trained and goes through the night, very lovely temperament.

No wonder there were 'accidents' - unfortunately it's a common phrase by people who don't belong to breed clubs and health test!
my partner wanted to rescue our pup!
Unfortunately for each pup that's 'rescued' the breeder produces another one and takes another £800 from the next 'kind person'! :(
Have a look at this site for the future and spread the word amongst anyone you know who maybe looking for a puppy!! http://www.dog-play.com/breedercomparison.htm

Hi, just seen your thread and wanted to add that it's probably worth taking out insurance for your puppy if you have not already done so. It's a sensible idea with any animal nowadays as veterinary expenses can be very costly even for relatively minor ailments and in the event any health problems do develop at a later stage you would be best to have your policy already in place as insurance firms will not cover any pre-existing condition.
Hope this hasn't alarmed you - it's genuinely not intended to - and I wish you all the best with your new family addition.
Regards, Teri :)
Hi,
thanks, my partner is already looking at insurance for her.
has'nt alarmed us and thanks for your best wishes.
i just wish we had'nt been so nieve!

Hi
Marks and Spencer offer a very good insurance policy at a very reasonable rate.
It is unfortunate that your pup hasn't had the best start to life but it's what you do from here on in that counts. I don't know what your experience of Newfie's is but they are certainly not a breed for the faint-hearted. Your cuddly little teddy bear will soon weigh about 10 stone but will believe that she can (and will) sit in your lap for a cuddle. DO NOT encourage any behaviours now that will be undesirable when the dog is the size and weight of a full grown adult!
I'm relatively new to the breed myself (my pup is 5 months old) but if I am in regular contact with two very experieced breeders so if I can be of any help at all, please feel free to PM me (click on my name at the top of this message, then in the top right corner click the blue 'message' button). If I don't know the answer, I'll badger my contacts to help!! :D
Good luck with your little girl and enjoy her while she's small as she won't stay that way for long!! :)
Would just like to say if you purchase a newfie puppy its parents should of been as mentioned hip scored elbow scored and heart tested, and all the other things any reputable breeder would do eyes etc.,Good luck with your new puppy as Shaynlola says dont stay small very long our newfie cross berner is nearly 6 months old,and is nearly 6 stone.ENJOY!!!!!!!!
Hi,
Thanks very much for your very useful info'-most helpfull..
Would like to keep in touch with you and will do so if we have any questions.
This site has been very helpful-i only wish i had looked on here before ......
(but then we would'nt have our lovely 'Daisy')

Hi
This site has been a godsend for a lot of us new to dog owning!! There is a wealth of experience among the members here and most are only too willing to help so feel free to ask any questions you want.
Now, as a fellow Newfie owner I feel I must warn you as to how addictive they are :) As I said, my little girl is only 5 months old and we're already planning our second (although not for a few years, I must add!!) Lola is brown so our next one will be a black boy hopefully and I doubt we'll stop at two!!
I have pm'd you a link so you can see some photos of my dogs...if you look at the top right of your screen you'll see the blue message button is highlighted, just click on it....
Quite agree,as you know im into the berners aswell and am already thinking i would like to move and have a pedigree berner and a possible pedigree newfie at sometime,i love Zanta and wouldnt change her for the world, but seeing the pups the other day well i lost my heart again, familys getting a bit worried now i think they are worrying there wont be any room for them.
another question:when can i wash my puppy and any special shampoo needed?
and when can we take her paddling?
thanks
Hi i wouldnt bath her unless she really needs it they have an oily coat which if washed too much will reduce the oils needed for keeping them warm if she does swim and cool for the hot weather, you are probably noticing though they are very clever at getting out of the sun and heat,Shaynlola recommended to me groomers royal jelly for bathing,as passed onto her by a newfie breeder dont think she will mind me mentioning it to you,i had to bath Zanta atabout 12 weeks as she had a patch of scurfy skin and he gave me a prescribed shampoo to clear up the scurf, and also she has raw egg 3 times a week and advised if her skin is scurfy only give her the white till its clear again.Newfies also are prone to skin complaints so watch her closely for flea allergies and mosquito bites, another thing Shaynlola passed onto me was collodial silver spray if they have a little itch or irritation i will be purchasing both,as for the paddling if you have somewhere safe and she can get in and out with no problems i would let her start now,has she had all her jabs ? watch when she comes out you will be soaked when she shakes all good fun.Zanta decided to stick her whole face in our water feature yesterday thencalmly strolled into the living room and shook it everywhere you just have to laugh,no good being houseproud.
oh we now have marks and spencer insurance for daisy-thanks for the tip x
Are you going to join ? would be great to have you on board.
think so-how much is it to join?
thanks for the photos-they look lovely dogs

Hi Scare65 & 1maximillion
Fancy seeing you two here :)
1maximillion, I think you had one two many glasses of wine last night...Scare65 has joined :P Maybe you should stick to the mineral water tonight, eh? :D :D
Thanks for passing on that info...wish I'd checked this thread before I PM'd scare65 as I've just repeated a lot of it!!
Had a good laugh about Zanta and the water feature :D :D Lola thinks its hilarious to fill her mouth with water and come and drop it in our laps
Havent had that one yet,and whats mineral water ? have some wine to finish cant let it go off.And to Scare65 glad you have joined.
Thanks both of you for all your info' and kind advice
sarah
Hi congratulations on your pup.
I would also recommend the groomers shampoo and conditioner though I just use the one for normal coats. I generally bath my newfie every 4 weeks in summer especially if she is moulting as it really helps to get rid excess coat and means that grooming her is easier, as you will soon find out newfies are muck magnets and will find a dirty stagnent puddle on the driest day.:) In winter I bath every 8 weeks depending on how dirty she is, I do have a blaster which makes it easier as I can bath and dry her within an hour.
I bathed my newfie when she was about 10 weeks old so it should be fine if you wanted too and I just used a really mild baby shampoo.
Good luck with your girl.
Nikki
thankyou nikki
can you put pics on this site,as i would love to put one on of 'Daisy'
Congratulations on your new pup :D
I have a newfi and a bernese. I love them both, but if I get another dog ( I really mean when :) ), I will get another newfi. The newf has just captured my heart :D
thanks tippytoes
Daisy is gorgeous-my parents think we are mad though....think she is gonna eat us out of house and home!
They have always had much smaller 'lap' dogs
something funny just happened-Daisy had pooed in the garden, then trod in it and walked in the kitchen,my son then accidently stepped in some then all the kids were screaming!!-yuk
gotta go and clean it up

Congratulations scare65!!! I love Newfies too, but i dont have room for another pup at the mo. I have a 6 month old Mastiff and he is a BIG boy!! :D :D I would love to see pics....you could e-mail them to me if you have any. Please. ;-)
as i dont think you can put pic's on this site,if anyone would like to look at our recent pic's of 'Daisy' then go to: http://photobucket.com/albums/a258/scare65/
regards sarah

Aaawwwww....too cute!!! :D :D :D
The breeder we rescued 'Daisy' from has now got another ad' with lots more puppies on!!!!
I can't believe it 2 ad's in as many days!!!
All the puppies are 'accidents' and not kc reg.

Be very careful iwth the worfing of insurance. Even those that claim to be for life actually mean the life of the dog,a dn exclude a condition after 12 months, or only pay out up the limit per condion, not per year.
Pinacle, and Pet Paln I know definately ahve real for life policies her an ongioing condiion will continue to be covered the next year and the amount payable per year is reinstated each year.

M & S do life time cover Brainless...I'm with them and after having a limited cover with Tescos I was careful to ensure my next insurance co offered lifetime cover
Nikki

Oh good, as some of them are sneaky with their wording. :D

I know...found that out to my expense when after 12 months Tescos stopped paying !!!
Nikki

I would contact the breed club and find out if they know of this breeders activities. If they are bad they will know by the fact that people contact them with problems with the dogs or dogs go through rescue.
Also if your pup is unregistered you may not know who the parents really are or their helth testing status. The breed club may be able to help verify their details for you.
thanks very much brainless-we are unsure what to do,but thats a good idea.
we are goona phone her today and ask where all the other 14 puppies have come from, etc.
We have just spoken to the breeder and she swears she hasnt got any more ad's, she cant seem to remove them off that particular website.
So she says she is not a puppy farmer, lets hope its true.
Sorry everybody just finding out how to do smileys,it works, and guess what not had a glass of wine yet. :-)
how do you do 'smileys'??
Hi only just learnt myself.you have to do colon then hyphen then closed bracket for smiley, and open bracket for sad and the others are in the help page, towards the bottom.:-)
oh i see -thanks very much-will practice:)
off to watch 'waking the dead'
Well done, the others are winking and shocked, incase you are not sure what will come out when you type in the dots brackets etc.,;-) :-o
last one went wrong-spose its keep trying;')
my partner has just told me to'get a life'!!:-)
