A freind of mine has beem looking for a new puppy. She has thought long and hard and wanted a medium sized puppy....preferably collie type.
I saw an add today....for 6 week old collie cross pups so phoned it up.The woman said she had 3 males left but that if I wanted one I had to get it now or dhe wa away for the rest of the day.I tried phoning my friend but could get no answer but knowing how much she wanted a pup I went round to see them.
I got there...mum and 3 pups were in the unfenced front garden. They were healthy looking enough if very grubby and mum looked VERY young.Got the usual ...she got out, don't know who dad is.Owner also said they're dirty cos they live in the shed...don't have dogs in the house!
Needless to say one came home with me! No questions...hand over the monet and take it away!! He is a totally gorgeous with classic border collie .Got a feeling there may be a bit of spaniel in there somewhere! He had a bath to remove the dirt and fleas and then went home with his new owner...much to my kids disgust.I only wished I could have helped them all...leaving the other 2 little mites to sleep in a dark dirty shed is too upsetting but I cannot have any more.

Well ..in this case I'm not sure! They had grandma there aswell as mum and she had been speyed so I am hoping that the mum to the pups will be too.....fingers crossed I'm right.

Fingers are certainly crossed ... but what about the parents' health tests? :(
- By archer [gb] Date 03.09.05 23:00 UTC
Typical cross bred pups...no parental health checks. However my freind was looking for a cross breed....and so it was either a case of buying an 'accident' or buying a 'designer' rip off'(not that they come with health tests!
I tried explain that she would be better off with a health tested pedigree...but theres no getting through to some poeple. At the end of the day both the pup and my friend are happy...and the pup will be looked after properly...its the best outcome for one poor little sole.Hope the others are as lucky

I can understand you taking the pup... or rather not being able to leave them there.  A pity you couldn't have taken all the pups and the mum, and put them into a rescue to be rehomed sensibly (and neutered).

A health tested pedigree isn't always best though... mongrels are often very healthy dogs because of the lack of inbreeding problems etc.

Sounds like a litter on her fist season probably like the bitches Dam.

I think you're right Brainless...they said they didn't want her to have a litter but were obviously careless.Thankfully they are not keeping another from this litter si it won't happen again IF they have the young bitch speyed.

Sounds just like my rott X GSD when I bought her home.  The mum was pure rott (as Opi should be, so we were told), and they ahd her and her four pups in a small, totally enclosed horse trailer in the middle of the August 2003 heatwave.  Opi was handed to us with wet forelegs where she'd been standing in the water bucket to cool off - took me months to get her out of that habit.  Also, the sire (who they did actually own) had been rather conveniently taken out for the day - we now know it's because he's half GSD.  Same reason they weren't docked, though we got the "it's illegal now" spiel for that.  Opi was flea infested as well, and horribly underweight - the owner (a horse farmer) was worming her with horse wormers, and feeding the entire litter dry cat food.

Like you, we should have walked away but I just couldn't leave her there, and I don't regret it - she's one in a million :)  and although I remember seeing rotts advertised from the same area previously (about the time of the mum's last season, I suspect) I've not seen any since, so hopefully they've learnt from it.

Good on you for getting lil pup out of that horrible situation, and I hope he brings your friend years of lunacy like my girl :D hopefully less affectionate toothmarks though!!!

Thankyou! I'm sure they will spend many happy years together.I've spoken to my friend this mornig and he has settled well with their other dog,has eaten well and although he cried last night he was clean overnight in his crate!Love him.
I know I should have walked away....and if I thought this was anymore than an accidental litter I would have done. However I'm hoping this will be the last litter for the little bitch and I'm hoping the other pups found/find good homes

I did exactly what you did when we went to look at a litter of alleged Jack Russells years ago.  I doubt if Kim was 5 weeks and was totally covered in fleas the mother looked like a famine victim.  The woman said she was getting rid of the mother to keep a pup.  She had perths disease and was one of the worst tempered dogs you could ever come accros but I would give anything to have her back as she was totally devoted to me.  My husband was saying dont buy her as I wrote out the cheque but she was so lovely I could have eaten her.

Where only human though aren't we and we know what we shouldn't do but i'd do exactly the same thing if i came across that situation and have done in the past.  Well done Archer and i hope your friend has lots and lots of happy years together with her new friend.

Warm regards Susan
