Just to play devils advocate, and go in a completely different direction as to why he wants to show. IF he is just starting out, and appreciates that he is unlikely to be placed abouve dogs in full coat, but wants the experience and practice at Open shows, then go ahead. And if the dog should happen to be a really outstanding specimen, who knows, he may even get a place or two. At least he will get some experience in the ring. Cut down coated breeds can win, but it is rare, and then only exceptional dogs (Ambrose won a CC under an American breed specialist a few years ago, sporting a very smart "puppy" trim, and Choice won RCC at Crufts in a half coat). Going to the other end of the scale, I am taking to Yankees in Pet trim to an open show next weekend, simply to keep the numbers up. Both dogs will enjoy a day out, and neither will have the faintest idea that they are standing at the wrong end of the line!
