hi iam a member of the armed forces serving in germany. after years of waiting my children are now old enough to enjoy a pet. i am looking to purchase a brown newfoundland he will go to a good loving home and be well looked after. i have tried german breeders, but have had no luck. if anybody could point me in the right direction i would be very grateful.  i will be able to come to uk at any time over the next six months.  thank you for your time

regards

Have a look at the contacts section on http://thenewfoundlandclub.co.uk for people who will be able to point you in the right direction.

Best of luck with your search but you may have to prepare for a wait as Newfies are still a relatively rare breed and the fact that your looking for brown will narrow your options even more as black is more common and more popular. It took me 18 months to find my pup who just happens to be brown but I had no preference for colour.

Please buy a pup from health tested parents. They should be hip scored (breed average is 29 so anything below this is good), preferably elbows too and a clear eye test within the last year. There are quite a few puppy farmers out there exploiting the high price that Newfies attract. Be wary of anyone selling pups at a knockdown price or charging over the odds.

Oh, by the way, you NEVER own a Newfie. A Newfie most definately owns you :)

Also make sure they have been heart tested.

There is also cystanairia (sp) in the newfoundlands now and a few breeders are also testing for this as the condition is bad in newfoundlands in the USA.

I think the 2nd (or was it the 3rd?) glass of wine was exactly the reason I forgot :D :D

Newfoundlands do not require an eye test - there are no known eye problems in the breed.
They do need hips score, elbow score, cystinuria dna test and heart test, also in the usa they also
do thyroid tests (not really done here)
