Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / should i get a 3rd girl dog?
- By Guest [gb] Date 02.09.05 12:23 UTC
Im thinking about getting a 3rd dog- possibly whippet girl - to live with my lab/collie x and cocker spaniel. Just wondering about the dynamics- 2's company,3's a crowd etc.

I would be grateful for any advice.

I have 3 dogs. Have had for a long time. It is easier with just 2, but I wouldn't be without any of mine. Well, except the times I've come home and found the bin emptied, or the sofa had been peed on........ ;)

I think it will depend on the dogs as to whether they will live happily together. Some bitches do, some don't. I've had to re-home a bitch in the past as she hated one of my other bitches and would quite happily have killed her given the chance. :( I now have 2 bitches and a dog and they love one another. For now. :D The youngest bitch is still only a youngster (10 months old) and is just starting to push her weight around. I had to separtate them last night at tea time. She is very food possessive - but this wan't over HER food but my male's!!! She didn't want his mum anywhere near it and told her to 'go away'.

What ages are the ones you already have and how do they get on with each other and other bitches?  I think a good age gap (2 1/2 = 3 years or so) is most helpful.

Just wondering, why would you want three dogs. I have two and I just about manage to share my time between them. I can't imagine what it would be like with another one much as I would love one.

Hi,  I have 4 bitches, they all live happily together.  3 Rotts and a cav.  You need to spend time with a new puppy seperately from the others or you will find they bond more with them than you (they understand each other more than you!).  Of course it doesn't work for everyone and a dog is often a better bet.  Good luck in your decision.

Hi everyone,
I've now joined so can reply to the replies!
My 2 dogs are 5 and 2 yrs old and are a border collie/lab x and a cocker spaniel. They get on really well, no fights etc. There tends to be someone at home most days so they both get loads of exercise. If I have to go out for more than 4 hrs then my dog walking friend sees to them- they also go to stay with her and her 5 dogs if we ever go away. I have 2 step-children who stay twice a week and no kids of my own. The dogs are my children and most of my time is spent with them. Adding a 3rd would be to me just like having a 3rd child!
The breed we are thinking of is a whippet...

The more the merrier as long as they acan still get the attention they need.  I have five and they all get taken out for walks together so having more doesn't mean they miss out.
