  I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the shih tzu fur can be cut shorter so it isn't long e.g. like yorkies.

yes...many people who have pet shihtzu have them clipped usually in a puppy coat style so the dog always looks like a puppy...also its easier if you are not showing...i would suggest you get it proffesionally done as it very easy to make a pigs ear of it if you are not proficient in grooming....
