Hi
Got a rescue dog today, he is lovely but still 'intact'( if ive got that right! )He is aggressive toward other dogs so i would like to have him castrated to see if it helps.
I didnt receive a neutering voucher so i wondered if anyone knew where i could obtain one from?
We dont receive income related benefits so the pdsa cant help us, but its so expensive!!!
Any ideas? we live in northamptonshire, thanks.

Hi Drufus,
Can't help you in relation to where to ge a neutering voucher, maybe someone else can help out there, but males are much cheaper to get "done" than bitches.  They normally go on the weight of the dog, so it depends how big your new boy is!  As far as being agressive towards other dogs, neutering may not help this.  I would get in touch with a good behaviourist to get this sorted out.
Good luck with your new boy.

Sarah.

Can you explain more about his aggression, bearing in mind that he's very unsettled and not showing his true character yet? Is he over-confident and cocky, or is her nervous?

There's an injection called 'Tardak' that mimics the effects of castration. It's often recommended that people try this with their dogs before they opt for surgery. After all, injections are only temporary - surgery is irreversible if it doesn't work!

hi well he's very loving towards me and the rest of my family (including our young kids), but we were warned b4 we got him that he didnt like other dogs.
When we walked him when we got him home he was barking at cats, and responding strongly to other dogs (although not barking or growling). he was a racer so i dont know if something has happened in his past (he's 5 ). hes lovely otherwise xcept he's got kc and the runs.

I'm guessing he's a greyhound - many ex-racers are unreliable with cats; in fact I'd say most dogs would be interested in chasing cats! I'm sure you were told not to let him off the lead for at least a month.

To be honest I'm surprised you were allowed to take him home while he's not well - if he has KC he shouldn't be taken out where he's likely to mix with other dogs, as its very infectious and can be dangerous to elderly or very young dogs. Also, if he has the runs he may be spreading virus into the environment, so make sure you clear up well after him. If you need to take him to the vet make sure the vet comes out to him in the car park rather than have him in the waiting room and surgery.

Is he a GreyHound?  As they normally have to have a very light anaesthetic, Maybe its worth getting in touch with the Greyhound Trust for some advice and to see if they can maybe somehow help you.

he's a whippet, and to tell you the truth i just wanted to get him the hell out of there! they were treating his kc with benylin!
He's going to the vets on friday night and the rescue told me never to let him off the lead.
I feel so sorry for him, the constant cough is draining to listen to. He's only had half his vaccinations too!

Contact the Dogs Trust to see if they can help. Used to be called NCDL

> they were treating his kc with benylin!

I always thought it was ok to give human cough mixture for KC to ease the discomfort in the throat. Did I get that wrong, then

My vets actually suggest giving dogs with KC Benilyn, it's a perfectly acceptable treatment for KC, although I'm not sure if it's actually registered for dogs - probably just as well, or the vets would right a prescription for it and charge twice was much!

Well it must be ok to give them benylin then, im only a novice!  Im just worried as it seem sto have got worse overnight. Im all cofused about neutering now, having read some other threads on the forum.

Benilyn definately helps with Kennel Cough ;)  If he's getting worse tho he may need antibiotics from the vets, with KC it's a wait and see thing, sometimes it's like us having a cold, other times it can be more like flu or a chest infection and needs treating accordingly ;)

You could try some Bio Yoghurt ( about 2 tablespoons ) on his food to help his tum, he may have the runs from changing homes, or it could be a bug but the Yoghurt can help either way ;) ;)

As far as neutering is concerned you really need to know why he's iffy with other dogs first or it could make things worse, the Tardak injection is a good idea as it will help you know if neutering will be effective without him having the op, it also wears off so if it hasn't worked or has made him worse then it won't be permanent.

Hope he gets better soon.  At least he's got an owner who worries about him now - lucky boy :)
