I hope somebody can offer me advise. i am going to view a white boxer pup but i have been told that they are prone to deafness, can someone please confirm this and also tell me what the odds are of a white boxer becoming deaf in the first year. i would be very gratefull for any advise as i do not want to part with a lot of money for a dog that has a high risk of going deaf.
My email address is markjaycocks@hotmail.com

Kindest regards

The risk of deafness with white boxers is indeed quite high (about 18% are affected) - it's a condition they're born with, not one they develop. This link will give you some information about it. A good breeder will have the pups BAER tested before sale, and all pups should have a certificate guaranteeing their hearing status.

They will either be deaf or not it isn't progressive deafness.

There is a high likelihood of a white Boxwer being deaf which is why in the past breeders prefered to put them to sleep at birth, as there was no sure way of checking until it became apparent (usually due to behavioural and training problems) that they were in fact deaf.

Any responsible breeder will take their whilte pups to be BAER hearing tested (they use electrodes to check if the impulses are being registered by the ear), this can be done from 5 weeks of age(same test as for babies that fail the routine tests for hearing at the doctors, as my perfectly hearing son did :D )

I would not contemplate buying the pup unless he has been BAER tested, no other test is reliable.

Hi Mark The breeder of the puppy should be able to tell if the puppy is deaf, all i can advise you is to take the puppy aside from his/her litter mates and whistle or make a noise to attract his attention not all white boxers are deaf and also if it has hearing it will not go deaf in its first year.I had a white boxer with perfect hearing in my last litter.also i see you say you do not wish to part with a lot of money, most white boxers from reputable breeders will not be sold for any more than £300.Good luck with viewing the boxer puppy why dont you join CD then you can ask more questions and let us all know how you get on. plz feel free to pm me

Hi Mark like the others have said... the pup will either be deaf or not NOW! and it will not go deaf in later life(selective deafness) now thats another thing all together, which they all suffer from!....also make sure that the parents have good "heart scores".....no more than a 1.......

Check this wed site ..BoxerDogPlanet.com.......... out , there is lots of info on White boxers there. may help you a bit more.
