Hi
One of my dogs has entropion according to my vet. He said he could have a simple operation to correct this. Does anyone know if this is a simple operation and how much it costs. Ben is a Lancashire Heeler and he is the size of a medium cat.
Thanks
Julie

Hi, it's a very simple op, and is performed under local anaesthetic in humans . No idea how much it would cost.
It usually cost about a hundred and fifty pounds, it's best to get the operation your dog will be in less pain.
warm regards Susan
Dear Susan
That is great - very cheap too. He gets lots of sleep and watery eyes. Strangley enough they look good now, but I will get him treated as quickly as I can.
Best Wishes
Julie
Dear Jas
Thankyou for your reply - I will take him as soon as I can arrange it.

Hi
Our Shar Pei had bad eyes and we left it as long as possible before getting the surgery and he ended up getting upper and lower eyelids done on both eyes and it was a great success. He has the most gorgeous eyes now and they cause him no irritation whatsoever. We wish we had them done sooner. As we had to have so much done it ended up costing us £950.00 for the single operation! Yes thank god he is insured!
Dear Nic29
Ben is 2 yrs old and I had assumed the breed just had gunky eyes as his brother gets sleep in the mornings too, but I got the vet to have agood look when he got his booster recently.
I don't have insurance, but I put money away every month so we'll be okay for the fee.
Thanks for your reply.

You do not say how old your dog is? Is he very young? It is a very simple and straightforward operation and nothing to worry about. I would think for a dog of his size, the cost will not be that great. Speak to your vet and get an idea of the cost? You also need to inform the breeder if you have not already done so :)
Our Lad was born with entropion, but my vet suggested at the time that to wait until he was about 7 months old, anyway as he grew and his head got bigger the eyelids straigtened themselves out. My vet said that this can sometimes happen, now his eyes are ok, and he only get droopy lids when he has been asleep etc.we were prepared for an op and he was insured from 6 weeks old so we didnt worry to much but I have heard different amounts as it does depend how bad it is....
Good Luck.

Hairydog, sounds more like ectropion with your dog, thats the opposite of entropion. :) Entropion is where the lids curl inwards and the eyelashes irritate the eye ball.

Thanks Nursey, never heard of that yet the vet said entropion,!!his bottom lids used to catch his eyes, and we had ruuny eyes but as I mentioned when he grew the vet said she wasnt going to operate as there was not need for it.
Thanks again.

Oh, now I'm confused. Did your dogs eyelids curl in towards his eyeball, or out, exposing the haw. When you said he sometimes still got droopy eyes, I assumed his lids must have turned out. Now you say that his bottom lids caught his eyes.

Anyhow. Entropion eyelids turn in.
Ectropion eyelids turn out.

:) when he was young they turned inwards and used to catch his eye, runny eyes etc, as he grew up they somehow straigtened out as his head got bigger (he a Golden),now some days they look perfect then other days when he is half asleep they somehow droop a bit at the bottom,if you get my meaning, and they again somehow straigten out, confused??? sorry.....
vet said there was nothing to worry about though??.....wish I could put a pic of him on it may help....

Ahh OK, probably was entropion then, sorry I'm easily confused. Carefully extracting foot from mouth.

Dear Admin
Ben is 2 years old. Is the reason for telling the breeder because it is hereditary? I know I will not be able to show him if he has this surgery, this is not a problem as he is not best of breed material and we knew that, he is a pet. I presume this means he would be unsuitable for breeding too - he has not been used in the past, so this should be okay.
Thanks

Hi Julie,
In some breeds the head shape changes as a puppy grows. As your lad is 2 years old, then nature is not going to alter his head shape now. The breeder does need to know because the problem is hereditary and your own dog should not be bred on from. The operation is very routine and although he will look like he has done 5 rounds with Mike Tyson for a few days afterwards, the problem is easily fixed. All ops hold risks, but don't worry to much about your dog. He will be fine and will be much more comfortable when the eyelids are corrected :)

I have a cocker spaniel who had entropian. He had his first operation at 9 weeks and two subsequent operations in the following four months. One eye was corrected immediately, the other one took three operations. The vet was reluctant to loosen the eyelid too much first time as they can then turn outwards.
The operation was simple, recovery time quick and relieved the discomfort instantly. His eyes were weepy for some months afterwards but all is fine now. The cost wasn't exhorbitant, probably £100ish, I can't really remember now, but it didn't cost much at all.
