Has anyone truthfully ever bought there dogs because they have seen them in the films?  I will admit to being one of the nutters who although not directly influenced by the 101 dalmatians film did make me finally decide on them.  We had been looking for a change of dog and they were the dogs which made me go wow everytime I saw them.

I have just sat and watched Shiloh and wondered if this film had made anyone want to buy a beagle.  Did Lassie have a major influence on collies when it was popular.

I would have sorely loved 'Benji' but wasn't he a crossbreed? Or the little'ist hobo was that a GSD? :D

My neighbours dog studded a litter that appreared in the dalmatian film with Glen close.

When I was 2 or 3 (too young to know better ;-)), I kept asking for a "Lassie dog". We had Border Collies at the time but my parents relented after a few months of head nipping, and I got Mandy, a sable/white Rough Collie. Apart from her though, hand on heart I have never been tempted to get a particular breed of dog that I have seen on the TV or in a film.

I got my first cocker at 13 but can't remember why we decided on that breed although I'm pretty sure we didn't see one on TV ;-)

When I was in infant school a friend of mine won the premium bonds and bought a lassie dog.  She became my best friend because of that dog.

LOL - now I know why I was so popular as a child ;-) And there was me thinking it was my sunny personality :-)

I confess to a liking for dals after reading the book! ;)

I immediately want every dog that ever starred in anything. (Quite tempted to buy a pig after seeing Babe) Even Werewolves can make me cry (American Werewolf in London). Fotunately my head rules!

Actually, if I hadn't been so traumatised by 'Old Yeller', I probably would have asked for a lab as well (but again I was very young ;-) )

Some years ago I was standing on a veterinary information stand at Crufts at Earls Court. Two women came to the stand, and asked me were they could find "One of those nice little grey coloured dogs on the Pedigree adverts". At that time a weimaraner breeder was being featured. So I said that the dog was a weimaraner and it was actually a big dog, to which I got the reply, "OH no you don't know the breed, they are small, the lady who breeds them actually picks one up and holds it in her arms". They wouldn't believe me that the one she was featured holding was a puppy! The dog had been intended for the older of the two ladies and she lived in a flat in central London. I put them in touch with the bred club and suggested they meet some before buying one.

As to TV and adverts influencing breed choices, none of my chosen breeds have featured in TV programmes or films at the time I have bought them. Having said that I do know everybody when I was growing up referred to the rough collie as the "Lassie Collie" and still you do see the odd advert saying "Lassie Collie pups for sale", although this is much rarer than it was.

It seems that every bad breeder of Sibes/Mals or crosses between the two calls them 'Snow Dogs'. I hate to think of the damage that film has done.

No, I have always liked BC's and always wanted one. I have to say though that I cringe every time I see an advert with one in it :-( Pedigree have one in their new advert at the moment, a particularly nice looking BW one that sends my boy mad every time it comes on

Not particularly by films, but I wanted a Cavalier because I had seen one owned by an acquaintance that was really beautiful and incredibly well behaved. Ah well, my boy's beautiful anyway.....! :-D  (I read up on the breed before actually buying though!)

Dogs & Cats made me fall in love with Anatolian Shepherds - Butch in the film - to the point of going to shows to meet them and so on, but in the end I decided they aren't for me - they don't match with what I want in a dog ultimately, it would be a poor match sadly.

I do like dalmatians too though, thanks in no small part to that film - I might get a show pup one day :) long way off though!

My friend moved to Turkey a few years ago and got a little rescue pup that turned out to be an Anatolian crossed with something (called Kangals there, I think). She's a lovely dog but extremely vocal and very mischievous but not what I'd be looking for in a dog either.
