Well, my puppy beat her first lot of dogs today - we were at St Neots companion show and she came 6th out of at least 25 puppies. I was so thrilled, after having had one person said she wouldn't show her at all if she was her dog. She's not too ugly to show after all, I'm glad I persevered!!! :-)

We also came 2nd last in the Starters Obedience, but at least we weren't last! And I won the Adult Handling which was a shock even out of only 3 of us. It went downhill from there though my boy was chucked out of Handsomest Dog (as usual!) and got last place in Best Trick. He walks backwards on his back legs, jumps through a hoop, and rolls over, he didn't deserve last! Ah well. :-)

Well Congratualtions lucy,
glad you keep at the puppy, we took out standard dog to his first show and no one liked him much now hes growing in to a lovely dog and the stud dog owner loves him, he has also gained a res CC, I do think the best puppys go through a really ugly stage, dont no what others think though!
That trick sounds really neat!

Thanks Fiona. Cavaliers certainly go through an ugly stage, particularly tricolours. They turn from cute snub nosed puppies into hideous long nosed things that look like Cav / English cocker crosses!! Hopefully they eventually turn back! She hasn't yet had her first season so I'm hoping that will change her head a good deal, I have been told they change a lot after that. Glad you liked the tricks, I've only just started teaching him to roll over, can't wait to startle people at the next champ show getting him to do that to keep him occupied and not bored during the classes! :-)

Hi lucy, Yes i have noticed personally that the americans and poodles go through that ugly stage and also look really immature when they first come out, and since we have had dogs i have noticed they seem to mature faster than the bitches!
Good luck for the future!

Thanks everyone! I was really pleased with my puppy's result when I'd been told she wasn't good enough even for open shows! On the other side of the ring today, judging novelty classes myself - exciting!! :-)

Well done Lucy!

Good luck with your judging.  I'm also doing Novelty classes today!  Looking forward to it except the rescue class, too many sad stories.....

Hi Lucy - Congratulations on your win with your pup, what do some peopleknow huh ! :D

And good luck for today, not something I could do as I'd just want to let them all win :)

It almost came to that in the Handsomest Dog class - between the ones I thought were handsome, the ones that weren't but I didn't want to throw them out of the 3rd of 4th class they'd been in, and the kids with dogs, I had to give nearly everyone a rosette!! The other classes were fine though, not as scary as last year! The Deputy Mayor came over to say hello and have his photo taken with one of the class winner, and asked if I judged a lot. I just said not very often, keeping quiet that it was the 2nd time ever!!!! :-D

Did you have the class ' dog judge would most like to take home' ? - silly question as I think I can hear a multitude of dog barks coming from your house :D

Congratulations on keeping it all together and not caving in 'too' much - kids expectant faces + big brown doggy eyes = torture

Felt really sorry for a little boy at another show today, it was his first show and he lined up with his Jack Russell only to have the pup slip his lead and run off (thankfully someone caught him before he ran into the road) - I just wanted to give him a big hug poor little lad, tears in his eyes aswell, he just wanted to go home after that :(

No, thank goodness that would have been even harder. :-D Next year they are talking about adding more classes, but hopefully someone else will be asked to judge (I've done it twice now!) as I'd like to enter my dogs for a change!!

Poor kid - I felt sorry for a small boy doing agility in the demonstration at yesterday's show - the dog wouldn't do a thing he told it to - he was awfully brave to keep trying!

I do like the look of sheer terror on some judges faces - you can just see their mind working overtime trying to think of a good excuse to quickly leg it out of the ring so they don't have to make a decision :D

LOL I still remember last year when it was the first time I had ever judged, and my first class was Best Veteran. I moved them all, looked at them and checked their teeth, asked their age and so on, and then got to the end of the line and realised I hadn't a clue what to do!!!

Luckily I remembered it being one dog's birthday so I gave him the class, and the other classes went fine.

LOL - oh, how cool :D  Right, next time I see a judge with that 'look' on their face I'll pretend it's my dogs birthday LOL :D
- By f.a.brook [gb] Date 31.08.05 13:26 UTC
Oh fine next time ill judge i will make sure i dont have "the look" lol!

LOL - I can just imagine lots of judges and potential judges now practicing not to have the 'look', I'd be totally hopeless and would be making such a fuss of all the dogs in the ring that I'd probably end up using all the first place rosettes in the first class.

I was told by a fellow club member tonight at training I looked totally in control when judging!! Mind you she didn't see me making a mess of the Handsomest Dog class!
