Topic Dog Boards / General / Could she be pregnant?
- By mittens [gb] Date 29.08.05 06:09 UTC
Our 8 month old neutered male Maltese has mated and tyed with our 2 year old unneutered bitch. Is there any chance she could be pregnant. Will be phoning the vets later but just wondered if when they were neutered it instantly meant they couldn't reproduce. Many Thanks.

Neutered males can remain fertile for up to a few months after the op - how long ago was he done?

I would definitely give the vets a call today and see what they think. They may advise giving her a misalliance injection to be on the safe side.

He was neutered 6 weeks ago. Do you think its very likely then that he is still fertile? Thanks

There is quite a high chance as this is very soon.  I know there was a c ase publiscised recently (of course I can't remeber where) where the dog was proved to be the sire by DNA tests even though he had ben castrated months earlier.  I don't know how that could be posssible, amazing really as after all unlike vasectomy where the storage and production devises are still in place the testes ae removed with castration.  I woudl love to knpow where the sperm could be stored for all this time?

Anyway I would get the mismating injection for your bitch, bearing in mind this will restart or prolong ehr season, so even more vigilance will be needed, and also she will need to be watched carefully for the next few months in case of infection which too many hormones can make more likely.

Ok will phone the vets later when they open, it would have to be a bank holiday. So how long before do you think before he is 100% infertile. Stupid me just assumed that once he was done that was it. We have had cats neutered before and have never heard of this. Also will he always still get the urge to mate every female dog in season or will this decline in time. Thanks.

Depends on the dog and the amount of provocation from the bitch.  With time he is likely to loose interest in sex, and certainly isn't likely to go looking for it, but a determined bitch is likely to wind him up enough to perform and they should really be kept apart when you are not there to supervise in case one of them got hurt if it happened again.

It's the exact same with male cats -they remain fertile for a few weeks after neutering as well. (And some do continue to mate depsite being neutered, I have seveal like this.)
