i have a 5 year old GSD that has an infactuation with licking bricks /stones.He doesnt chew of gnaw just lick.We took him to the vets and he told us to add a sulphur block to his water bowl which we did,to no avail,he still licks bricks.
We use to have a rockery but no more and when we take him out off lead we take a ball or a rope toy but he will forget it instantly if he stumbles across a stone of any sort.We live in Cornwall so its impossible to walk any where without comming across a cornish stone wall.Needless to say, it does not last long,it comes home with him.
He will shake an drool and sing to the stones in the licking prosess but no matter how many we take away from him he still manages to find a replacement from some where.
Does any one elses dog do this too? He is never left alone and has the run of the house and garden. He has another dog for company and lots of toys.He has 2 or 3 walks a day and 6 children to play with as well as my husband and myself. Its deffinately not boredom as he will turn away from a toy or ball to pick up a stone or brick.!!!!!!!!!
Poppy (6 month old CKCS) doesn't just lick them, she bites chunks off and brings them in the house to munch on, likewise with the concrete inbetween. I put it down to the fact she's teething, but after reading your post might try the sulphur block.
Sorry I can't help, but just thought I'd reassure you, you're not alone!!

yup... we reassure you,,, you're not alone.. my bsd luves bricks.. stones,, cement ect.
he just takes them in his mouth and
[a] if they are too big.. then carries it to his bed and then begans munching happily
if its small or if we're standing right behind him him .. he doews a quick gulp and runs off to have some water..
we told the vet and he asked us to add calcium supplements not sulphur one's..
guess i wont be able to help you either..
but mine's a pup.. yours is a jolly big dog !! ;)
Its a strange one really.Hes always done it.He doesnt eat them or chew them just licks and drools with so much enjoyment that he also sings and physically shakes. The only help we have been given was advice to take him to the nearest animal psychologist which is about 20 miles away and get him assessed.
Its not a medical problem where he can harm himself in any way as he isnt chewing or digesting, its just a lil embaressing.People stare at him like hes a loony.hehehe.We oftern find a big foaming patch of drool on the drive way and have to side step to get to the front door.Thats if you can fight your way through the mountain of rocks he has hoarded. No matter how many we take away he seems to find more from who knows where. They just apear from no where as we dont have stones in our garden. The other thing is, the bigger the better.Theres nothing better to him than a breeze block.?????

Yeah, my Cavs and Yankee sometimes bring in bits of brick and mortar - just another weird thing they do to puzzle us I guess!!

Doesn't his tongue get all cut up from the rough bricks? That sounds like it would hurt.
In answer to your question, no.We have never had a problem with a cut or sore tongue.About the only thing we have had is on very rare occasions he has tried to pick up a stone/brick that is really huge and hes bitten his tongue or the inside of his mouth causing an instant yelp.We regulaly check his mouth over to just to make sure he isnt getting any problems with this nasty habbit and also looking out for any signs of worn teeth, just in case.He gets his teeth brushed aswell, which he loves, and we have never noticed anything untoward going on.

My dogs seem to lick cement walls like in the basement. They love licking the tile on washroom walls as well. Anything with a smooth or 'textury' surface is interesting to them!
