Has anybody on champdogs ever managed to keep rabbits and dogs successfully. The reason I ask is for the second time my boxer has managed to jump a 4 ft fence, climp up 4,5 foot into the kids treehouse and totally destroy the rabbits hutch, take a rabbit and go back into the garden and well you can guess the rest. Other than put up a six foot fence all round the kids play area any ideas?. I am so sad at the moment as it looks as though the rabbit is'nt go to make it.

Haven't done it myself but if you visit Burtonbank deerhounds you'll find several of these very high prey drive hounds acting as heated beds for an assortment of fancy rabbits. :)

So sorry to hear about your rabbit!
My daughter used to breed dwarf lops and whilst they were kept in 6'x3' runs (she would only put them in hutches when they had babies! ;))they used to sometimes run free in the garden along with chickens, ducks and Rough Collies! But then they were all taught 'LEAVE' from puppies and accepted that they all lived together.
Have you trained your dog not to touch the rabbits?
pepsi was brought up with a rabbit until she was about 2 and a half. Then we have had rabbits since but its only recently that she has started to attack the hutch. Now I think about it, could this have anything to do with her having a litter? Sadley the rabbit has just died.

Sorry about poor bunny. :( And I should have said 'she'.
I was breeding my girls all the time we had rabbits - about 10 years. I understand that Pepsi has been brought up around the rabbits, but have you sat with a rabbit on your lap and taught your dog to 'leave it'?
Not recently but when I say 'brought up with a rabbit', the dog and rabbit used to live in the house together. They used to litterally play together all the time as the rabbit was a house rabbit.

Ah but in the house is very different to in the garden!! My dogs were great friends with our cat, both indoors and in the garden, (because they were trained to be, not because it came naturally!) but if ANOTHER cat came into the garden, then it was fair game to chase it!!
she used to go in the garden too. It just seems strange that this has only happened since she had her litter of pups in May.
Hi our first boxer used to just push the chicken wire on my sons rabbit hutch to annoy the rabbit, now my neighbours have four dwarf rabbits in a huge run, yes right beside my fence where my dogs are in their run. not had any trouble as yet all they do is sit and watch the rabbits with curiosity al over their faces, just hoping the rabbits dont burrow under as goodness knows what would happen.

It is a bit like expecting a fox tyo behave in the chicken run, your dog obviously sees the rabbits as Lunch or a plaything.
The only course is to keep the Rabbits in a dog proof are. What about purchasing some dog run panels and making a compund within which the Rabbit Hutches are, and te kids stuff?
My dalmatians are all brilliant with our rabbits but the beagle who was not brought up with them is a nightmare. I am afraid I think it will have to be something completely covered in to stop them. Sorry to hear about the bunny. :(

I have 3 working Terriers and a Belgian hare in the garden! The two males and Papillon female are fine with him (after a while) they are used to Rabbits being in the garden, so only took a short while to remember, it was over a year gap between Bunnies. The Border bitch was and is used to control Rabbits, she would kill this one in a flash, never going to be any different, in her eyes all Rabbits are for killing. I used her for vermin control and she was a year old before this Rabbit came, I have to be VERY careful when she is around.
Dawn.
I dont think Terriers ever lose the instanct to kill. One of my JR's sat for two weeks in the bathroom because she knew there was a mouse behind the bath. This is a dog who never moved out of bed unless neccessary. Mind you I will say we never had any vermin in the house. ;)

As far as my dogs are concerned, small furries are lunch. My guineapigs included. :(
