Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / What food for BC puppy?
- By Guest [gb] Date 26.08.05 13:45 UTC
I have a 10 week old BC puppy.  Her stools are really runny. She is fine on plain rice and chicken, but give her predigree chump puppy food, and all hell breaks loose from her rear end!!

What make is the best. Which is best from a supermarket shelf? I thin PC is too rich for her.  Also should i add some stuff to help keep her stools solid?

Shes also eats a lot of grass, plants and anything else she can.

Any help guys?

Hi, are you changing from chicken and rice back to the puppy food fast?, if so that could be the cause, mix some chicken and rice into the puppy food.

What had her breeder fed her on? I feed my border collie puppy barf diet which is raw food, if you have the time to do it and it suits your dog its great. There are also alot of good dry puppy foods, pedigree also is to rich for mine.

When you got your puppy. If it was from a reputable breeder you normally will get a diet sheet and a bag of food that the puppy has been on.
Chicken and rice alone will not give the puppy all the vitamins it needs for a healthy growth. Speak to your breeder and find out what they have been feeding the puppy.
I would feed on a dry complete food for now if you cannot find what she was on previously.
As previous post says. When changing a dogs food especially a young puppy, you do it over a time period and mix a little of the new food in with the old, then a little bit more the next day until eventually you are only feeding the new stuff.
Don't keep swapping food. This is probably what is causing the problem.
Also make sure that the puppy has been wormed at the correct times.

Spice BC was on Ped. chum when we got her from her breeder, but we changed GRADUALLY, to Nature diet puppy, then onto Nature diet for adult dogs ( she is nearly 2yrs now). She is doing really well on this food and we also give her raw/cooked veg as treats,to clean her teeth as Nature diet is a soft moist food.
She has a healthy coat and teeth and is full of energy so it suits her, but I guess not all dogs are the same :)
Her stools are non smelly and easy to clean up, which is a bonus and she has never had an upset tummy.
