You just did to me, in answering my question, saying you're not fed up with comments made to small breeds owners such as me.
You best re-read your post.
I said I couldn't find any comments that I would think to be disrespectful to small dog's or their owners, not that I wasn't fed up of them. How can I be fed up of something that I haven't seen?

I should let them get on with their flounce, Natalie. They're finding offence not only where none was intended (which happens sometimes), but also where none exists. It appears that anyone who has different preferences is wrong and offensive.
Yes I am sorry to say I agree with you JG :(

LOL! I'll take that the way I hope it was meant! :D :D :D
LOL Well actually you know...... ;) :P
LOL Sorry I didn't mean it like that :D I must word it more carfully next time, so you don't catch on!!!! :D :D :D

I used to hate small dogs - I'd hate the way owners put bows in their hair or dress them up!! My husband and I thought that only big dogs were proper dogs. However I now own a westie and we love him to pieces, I suppose he is a medium dog. We live in a small house with a small garden so couldn't have a large dog. Thank goodness there is plenty of choice to suit everyone.
June, I am not picking at your post, but really even the way you said it, it wasn't the small dog's that you hated, just their daft owners at the end of the lead!
I think this is one of the main reasons why people are put off smaller dogs, but as we know it isn't the dog's fault....

Im really sad to hear this thread,i thought if you was a dog lover you loved all dogs any dogs
big, small, type ,colour. This is why so many people are coming out of showing because of this
attitude.
Sue

You're being unfair. We
do love dogs - we've just given the reasons why we prefer to own the breeds we do, that's all. Why not castigate the people who own small dogs for hating giant breeds? Because, like us with small dogs, I don't think they
do 'hate' them - they just don't appeal. What's wrong with that?

How am i being un-fair!! That was an opinion not a critisism

An opinion based on what? Why imply that we don't like dogs?
I think most people have said they love all dog's - big and small, but that doesn't mean you want to live with them!

Can't really see your logic, what has likeing one or more breeds to do with coming out of showing. For some dog owners their tastes are limited to one breed or type of dog and soem people are very eclectic in their tastes, a bit like music really.
I can only see myself living with the bred I ahve now even though I like a lot of breeds, there is just the one for me.

Oh come on! Nobody's getting uppity because you don't choose to have larger dogs! Why should you get uppity because people don't choose to have smaller ones - all the more for you, I'd have thought!
I wouldn't want a small dog; nor would I want a giant breed. Neither are to my personal taste. What's wrong with that?
Your missing the point, we don't care wether people prefer big or small dogs it's the lack of respect for small dogs and their owners.I'm always respectful of other peoples feelings regarding their dogs. I try not to generalise either not all staffie dogs are aggressive, not all BC are manic (although mine was;)) and not all small dogs are pampered spoilt unhousetrained ankle biters.
I just find someone refering to my dog as a Rabbit a bit hurtful on a forum which is here for friendly advice and chat.

Nobody referred to your dog as a rabbit! Brainless used to breed show rabbits, and if she wanted a smaller pet she'd prefer to go back to her rabbits than have a small dog. That's not being disrespectful, for goodness' sake! It's merely stating a personal preference.

Caz, Hear , hear!!!

No never said I didn't like them, in fact find them charming, just wouldn't want to own one, would prefer another animal if that size.
Just the same as I wouldn't want to own a Spaniel (too busy and don't like floppy ears), a molloser breed (couldn't cope with the slobber, even though can live with the terrible amount of hair a double coated breed will leave around), a sight hound (too sight orientated which with my lack of same would make them very hard for me to own) etc, even though I have a liking for most of the individuals I know in the breeds. Absolutely love my freinds Dobes, can handle them, but wouldn't want to own them nor any of the guarding breeds (just too big a responsibility dealing with their natural drives for me to feel comfortable). There are lots of other dogs I wouldn't care to own.
The original poster asked for opinions and reasons, and that is what people gave :D

I loved my Rabbits, and Cats dearly when I had them, and took my Rabbit breeding and showing very seriously. the advantage of the Rabbits over a toy breed of dog from the breeding and shoing poit of view is that they breed faster and you haven't the worries over homing the surplus (they can go in the freezer). :D :D :D
From a dog I want something else, and don't think a small dog would do it.

Seriously if I was to breed the small breeds or some of the macho breeds I would be even more worried than I am now about the kind of people attracted to the breed and their future welfare. I don't want to home a pup where it might end up a guard on a chain, or a little one that never gets to go out because it doesn't need to.
With the former the inappropriate cack handed ownership might end with the dog being put to sleep if it became aggressive, or with the little ones that they may be mauled and hurt by kids, or treated like a fashion accessory.
Despite ones best efforts it can be very hard to judge future homes accurately. The idea of finding 10 suitable owners for sa breed like my freinds dobes terrifies me, and the consequences for the dog if it goes wrong. :(
Oh dear! I was only interested in other people's opinions. I certainly wasn't expecting to cause bad feeling.

Don't worry, you haven't! Most people are aware that everyone's personal tastes are different, and that there's nothing wrong with that. - in fact it makes the world more interesting. It would be appalling if everyone all wanted the same thing.
:)

Brainless, what breeds did you use to show in rabbits? I was in coloured Poles for a good few years, also dabbled a bit in cashmeres but it was the Poles I did well with. (Will never forget that 5 star CC at Bradford for instance!) :) I don't show rabbits either anymore. Somehow the dogs and cats took over. :) (Also used to show hamsters.)
Marianne

I had chocolate English, now I know that JG would like those :D
Used to like stewrding and handling the poles, they coudl be feisty, but I loved theier upright show stance, they sat like litle cats with their neat ears, far more attractive than the dwarfs. Mind they were lively litle things not cuddly really. :D

Chocolate? Like you get at Easter? Yum! :D

No spotty :D I will send you a pic of the ideal breeders are striving for, and what they get.

Gloves for Cruella? Pretty! :D

I always wondered why she had to have dalmations, as Rabbit fur would have been far easier to come by with the spots too. :D

And much softer, too. Dal hair is so prickly. I always suspected she was mad. :D

In many ways not that different to Malinois in body and ears, LOL. :D
Mariane

:D
The dogs I hear most when I walk round the village tend to be JRs (they go on and on and on and on ...), though a couple of Yorkies and a collie are noisy. Apparently the ideal burglar deterrent is a small dog to make the noise and a big one to look intimidating - at least that's what the Crime Prevention officer said!
:)

Think you are right about the JR.. some breeds in general tend to be a bit more yappy that others I think.
My mum is terrible for not training her dogs not to park ( she has a scottie and a poodle) the poodle never shuts up honestly. :-D
I like peace and quiet me :-) ( an old grump my daughter says) whatever dog I have it has to be trained not to bark :-)

Lots of people around here also don't train their small dogs to walk properly on the lead. :( It's sad to see them straining and coughing as they try to drag their owners along. I suppose it's because the dogs aren't all that strong and heavy that they can get away with it.

100% agree with you on that one. ;-)
This is where the smaller breeds are penalised I think though no fault of their own and poor ownership.
People are terrible for buying a small breed and then forgetting the thing needs properly trained. They think they are lap dogs then wonder when they are abit older why they are out of countrol.
I have a woman that brings a westie to be trimmed with a full body harness. Hello !!!! I tell her ttil I am blue in the face she is wasting the dog by not training it. Will she listen NO she is full over every excuse under the sun. I see the little sod taking over. He doesn't like being trimmed he doesn't like be told what to do.. grrrr it is 100% her fault. A male westie when it is an adult is a strong dog at probably averaging 12 inches can be a lot stronger than most realise. . You can't tell people they have to learn sometimes and the dog suffers for it. :-(

The terrier breeds seem to suffer most; I suppose it's because they're physically small and people either forget (or more likely never realised in the first place!) that they're designed to be working vermin-killers, not lapdogs! The poor things have all their instincts denied and get frustrated. The ratting and hunt terriers I know are very quiet and sensible.

WHy do posts fall this way sometimes. If you post falls behind someone it looks like you are refering the their post when you are not.. grrr know there is a simple reason :-)

Get an Aussie, JG - Tara does a very good husky impersonation when she hears anything outside :) Our elderly neighbour loves her BECAUSE she makes a lot of noise :) I'm not so sure that new neighbours (if we move) will be so charitable :D
Daisy

I like both and would never want to be without little *and* large. :D
Cons with a little dog: you break your back when you first start training them as you have SOO far to bend down.

They're not much use as guard dogs as they couldn't REALLY *do* much. :)
Cons with big dogs: they take up a lot of space, especially in the car. And when they get old and perhaps have HD etc and can't jump into the car anymore, even more of a problem. It always worries me greatly that any of the big dogs should get injured during a walk, as I could never manage to get a large dog home on my own if it had to be carried.
But really I think both have such marvellous points that I cannot be without one or the other. :) Dogs are what you make of them, and all breeds can be great for so many things. I had a friend at home in Sweden whose Cavalier bitch was an obedience champion, and the first EVER obedience Ch. in Sweden of ALL breeds was a Papillon!
Marianne (2 little and 7 large)

Other cons for me would include:
Many of the toys are hard/impossible to fully housetrain.
Some have an atitude that gwets them into trouble as they do't care they are small.
Frankly I like medium sized breeds.
Don't see the point to the tiny/toy breeds as would as soon have a cat or go back to breeding and showing the Rabbits.
Staffies are the perfect size.
Dont take too much room up in the bed but big enough for a warm cuddle.
:)
I love large dogs, my rotts are perfect - I also love mastiff's but too much drool for my liking, my prefference is infact bull faced breeds - so I also love pugs, bull dogs, boston terriers etc - I would love to have 1 of them all, just no room :) Give me a small dog as long as its a 'solid' looking small dog...sorry no poms, shih's or maltese for me - however I do LOVE the mini dachshund :D ...............of course in the black and tan tho!
I like them big :D
My hubby also fits into that catagory :D
Many reasons why I have a newf and a bernese........I like hair like tumbleweed running around my floor, stringy slob is soooo attractive in ones hair and they keep my feet warm in the winter :D
Staffies are perfect hot water bottles if a tad on the heavy side ;)
Especially when 2 of them are laying on your legs when trying to turn over and they flatly refuse to move :D

Nah, the perfect size is a dog you can touch without having to bend down!
:)
I grew up with a jack russell who suffered with what we call "little dog" syndrome. ie thought he was 10 times bigger and could take on cows lol :D
I so wanted a bigger dog when i was a kid but mum wouldnt have anything any bigger than a jack(she's a small dog lover ) so when i got my own home and family, along came the big dogs.
theres lots of pro's to big dogs, they cant hide easily, you dont strain your back bending to fuss them unless of course you try to pick them up :D :D
the only con i have found and thats since getting our kai (mal) is that there arnt that many toys out there designed for big powerful jaws..... nothing seems to live past a week lol
if any of you know of any seriously hard wearing toys i love to hear from you :D
dogs have a 'pup tread' tyre.
It is still in one piece after 6 months :)
